Planning a trip to Meghalaya-Assam in September 2012

Hello Everyone,

My best friend is getting married and I finally get to visit North-East India (Been a dream ever since I had a crush on an Assamese guy in 5th grade )

Planning to visit Shillong-Cherrapunji-Kaziranga with a friend during September 19th-26th 2012. Below is the plan that I have sketched. Would love to have any insights/opinions from you all.

p.s: I read somewhere that Kaziranga will be open to public only from November 1st. Please provide some details if possible.

Since the image is not quite visible, I will just brief you all about the trip plan.

19th Sept: Land at Guwahati airport. Hire a car at Guwahati and head to Shillong. (100 kms)
19th - 21st Sept: Check out places in Shillong as well as Cherrapunji.
22nd Sept: Head back to Guwahati and return the car. Take a bus to Kaziranga Wildlife Sanctuary. (283 km)
23rd Sept: Evening head to Sibsagar (150 km)
24th - 25th Sept: Attending Wedding and Reception in Sibsagar.
26th Sept - Take a bus to Jorhat Airport (55 km).

Well since Karizanga will be closed till 1st November, why don't you add 22nd to Shillong/Cherrapunjee? I will be glad to help you on the SHillong/Cherrapunjee leg.

Not able to visit Kaziranga is going to be a huge dissapointment. I was thinking of Dibru-Saikhowa National Park and Majuli Island as an alternative, but I am guessing even that might be inaccessible due to floods.

Would love to spend an extra day in Shillong.... Have read so many posts about Meghalaya.Cant wait to get out there and explore.. !! Any help would be appreciated Karikor..

Tell me what do you have in mind for Shillong/Cherrapunjee? Like what are you looking forward to and how would you like to spend your 3/4 days here?

We are planning to visit Shillong and Cherrapunji in early 2013. Our trip will be of 6 to 7 days and will be coming to shillong directly from kolkata. I wish to stay 2-3 nights in cherrapunji and 1 nights in shillong and looking to stay some offbeat places. Can anyone give some itinerary for 6 nights.
