thanks Karikor for replying. Your comments have put clarity on the schedule.
Few questions though
24: I am finishing Elephant/Jeep safari in kaziranga and then driving to Shillong. THis would practically take the entire day. How can i fit in shillong site-seeing here?
Not able to find Annesville at all. In fact, a google search brings this post. Nothing else is related to any Annesville in India.

25: Upper Shillong - Mawphlang - Mawlyngbna- Mawkdok
After finishing the sacred forest and then driving over to Mawlyngbna, you feel that it would be still feasible in a day?

30th - Shnongpdeng - Amlarem - Jowai - Laitlum - Shillong
Maps confusion here. I guess that you mean the Grand Canyon when you say Laitlum, but on the map Laitlum and the Laitlum grand canyon are far apart. Which one are you referring to? i had a similar confusion about Laitkynsew as the map shows this in a different place, north Rnngain. But i remembered that you had written that CHR is in Laitkynsew and hence was able to locate.

But, thanks a lot for the replanning sugggestion.
It has brought in an extra day and the suggestion about staying mid-way at Sohliya or Umden is a great suggestion.

Not able to find Annesville at all. In fact, a google search brings this post. Nothing else is related to any Annesville in India.

Kaziranga to Shillong is just 5 hours. So if you start at 10, you should reach Shillong by 3pm. So a little bit of sightseeing is possible in the afternoon and maybe cafe hopping in the evening.
Annesville is not yet opened to the general public, so they have not done any advertisement at all. But I can always pass you their number.

25: Upper Shillong - Mawphlang - Mawlyngbna- Mawkdok
After finishing the sacred forest and then driving over to Mawlyngbna, you feel that it would be still feasible in a day?

Let me get into details for you to understand better.
Say you start from Annesville after breakfast at 9am
Annesville-Mawphlang Sacred Groves (15km or 30mins)
Exploring Sacred groves (1hr)
Sacred groves - Mawlyngbna (50km or 1.5hrs)
Explore Mawlyngbna (5hrs)
Mawlyngbna - Mawkdok (75km or 2.5hrs)

So you should be in Mawkdok by 7:30pm. 1.5 hrs rest and freshen up. 9pm Dinner. And to bed by 10-10:30pm.

30th - Shnongpdeng - Amlarem - Jowai - Laitlum - Shillong
Maps confusion here. I guess that you mean the Grand Canyon when you say Laitlum, but on the map Laitlum and the Laitlum grand canyon are far apart. But i remembered that you had written that CHR is in Laitkynsew and hence was able to locate.

The Laitlum in google maps is the one in Mawtawar which is 40km away from the Laitlum gorges. So do not fully trust google maps.
From Jowai to Laitlum it will take 1.5hrs or 65km
Laitlum to Shillong will take 1hr or 20km

But, thanks a lot for the replanning sugggestion.
It has brought in an extra day and the suggestion about staying mid-way at Sohliya or Umden is a great suggestion.

If you have extra cash stashed away somewhere, you can even think of Phi Ro Sha resort or Bamaeri resort.

Thanks Karikor for your patience and i apologise for having you to spoon-feed me on the Mawphlang - Mawlyngbna day.
- I will follow the details for the Mawphlang - Mawlyngbna route, this will save me a day
- Please do give me the details of Annesville. I will plann a stay there when on the shillong sector
- i couldn't find extra cash anywhere, so i will go by the original suggestion of regular places :-)

Karikor, this is the version i have done now. I did go back to my original plan of Mawphlang and Mawlyngbna on separate days mainly considering the fact we are with kids and we usually take a long lunch break + lot of other breaks.
Any goof-ups that you see in this plan?
Once you give the go-ahead, i will start contacting the hotels. Also, will go for Annesville in Shillong.

The goof ups:

1. Better to stay in Annesvilles also for 25th night.
2. Mawphlang is on the way to Mawlyngbna, then why do the same way twice in your short trip?
3. It is closer from Annesville to Mawlyngbna than from Cafe Cherrapunjee.

2. Mawphlang is on the way to Mawlyngbna, then why do the same way twice in your short trip? --> Completely Agree. This is at the cost of not having a very tight day and the possibility of having to miss out on something due to delays elsewhere.

1. Better to stay in Annesvilles only for 25th night & 3. It is closer from Annesville to Mawlyngbna than from Cafe Cherrapunjee. --> Can you send me the location of Annesville? I assumed that it is in "shillong" and used it for a shillong stopver. I didnt quite understand pt 1. So are you advising shillong stopver to be something else (as you had told earlier as Upper Shillong - also so that i reach earlier from Kaziranga) and use Annesville instead of Cafe Cherapunjee as the base for the Mawlyngbna day.

Good that there were only few goof-ups and thanks again for the further refinement.

Annesville is in Upper Shillong, the higher reaches of Shillong city, in the southern part of the city, 7-8 km from Police Bazaar, on the road that goes to Sohra, Mawlynnong, Mawphlang, Mawsynram, Mawkyrwat, Nongstoin, Tura etc.

thanks, noted the edit and now i understand. Thanks for sending me the contact.
Now "Upper Shillong" makes sense. Google shows it to the north of Police bazaar and hence the reason for my confusion.
Now the plan looks final. Will update once all the hotels are booked. Off to book a car now ...

hi ! this is a very in depth thread and while i was researching for our Meghalaya-Assam trip around the same dates in December (ex-mumbai). Bookings yet to be made so all flexibility to plan currently. I came across your query Rajarams. Its been quite helpful with all the tips and details that @karikor has explained !

Few questions for the both of you esp @karikor :

-how easy/costly is it to self drive a rental car from Guwahati . An if its a large group does it make sense to take a Traveller/mini-bus/cars- any thoughts on the same?
-Also, does it make sense to do this trip with a Local tour (being a group). I am usually used to do self-travel-research- plans and booking. But just wondering if its easy to do this with a local operator with customized itinerary to work out the travel logistics and bookings only because of the sheer size/nos. and peak season? Ive noticed that you have already been contacting stay options and finding that some may not be available in smaller places.

-As per my initial research, i had thought of doing atleast a second night in Kaziranga/mahuli- any thoughts on the same?

-Also, suggestions/reviews /pro and cons if any on these stays : CHR/Sai mika and Shillong : Aerodene cottages/ Tripura (this may be more expensive ) - looking at some nice homestay/traditional local style built experiences and hospitality and kid-friendly as criterion mainly. Any other suggestions? I will soon put together a final itinerary too but basics are similar to rajarams above with the exception of visiting Mawkdok . Could you tell me about the highlights of that place?

- Is the David scott trail doable by kids? How strenous/long.

- Also, suggestions for the Caving place since there are so may-something nice yet which kids can do .

Thanks so much !

Hi sunshine,

What is the size of your group? How fit are you and what is the youngest and oldest age in your group? Stay is dependent on your budget, a decent option without any bells and whistles will be about 2.5-3k a night.

Karikor, Kutmadan is sold out (we needed 3 rooms and they have only 2 ). Any other alternative nearby? I saw that you had suggested Sai Mika & La Kupar on another post. Which would you advise among the two?
thanks

Sa-i-mika is a vast area so more or less a resort, but I think hospitality wise, La Kupar Inn seems to be a little ahead.
