Planning for a 4N/5D trip to Meghalaya with the following in mind:

Arrival: 26 Jan (Friday) at Guwahati airport at 07:50 hrs
Departure: 30 Jan (Tuesday) from Guwahati at 19:55 hrs

Companion: Couple

Stay: Homestays/retreats preferable

Likes: Adventure, treks
Dislikes: Hectic schedule, costly resorts, crowds

Please help to make the itinerary and suggest good accommodation accordingly.

For just 5 days you can think of Mawphlang, Mawlyngbna, Mawphanlur, Nongriat and Shnongpdeng.

Can you please elaborate how to make the itinerary and the places of night halt? As mentioned earlier we reach Gau early morning on 26 and leave on 30 late evening.

This is what I would suggest -

26th - Reach Guwahati. Proceed to Mawlyngbna. Halt at Mawlyngbna
27th - After Lunch Proceed to Sohra. Enroute check out the Sacred Groves at Mawphlang. Halt at Sohra
28th - Sohra sightseeing in morning. After lunch Trek to the Double Decker Living Root Bridge. Halt at Nongriat
29th - Come back to Sohra and Proceed to Dawki and Shnongpdeng. Halt at Shnongpdeng
30th- Proceed to Shillong. Shillong sightseeing. Proceed back to Guwahati.

Thanks karikor. Can you please guide me with the accommodation/booking portals at the respective halts so that I can check their availability before finalizing my itinerary.

You may consider David Scott Trail....but with such a tight schedule, I am not sure if you will have time for that. Karikor is the best for Meghalaya. He will be able to help well. Once you decide on the locations and date, you can book the rooms. There is hardly any hotels/ homestays which can be booked online. Its always going to be confirmation over phone and pay when you reach. Though some cases you can send the money to their personal bank account.

With some tweaking, the itinerary stands as:

Day 1: arrival, Guwahati - Umiam - Shillong - Mawsynram - Mawlyngbna - Mawlyngbna halt
Day 2: Mawlyngbna - Mawphlang - Sohra halt
Day 3: Nongriat - Sohra halt
Day 4: Sohra - Dawki - Shnongpdeng halt
Day 5: Shillong remaining - Guwahati, departure

- How feasible does the itinerary look?
- I need the information regarding accommodation at the halts as everything depends on their availability?
- Is it a good option to stay in camp at Shnongpdeng considering the winter temp. (Jan end)?
- Will availing point to point car booking feasible for the locations or do we need to hire one for the entire duration?

What time do you reach Guwahati?

Contacts I can always share with you.

Best time to visit Shnongpdeng as it will be warm, rest of the year it's hot and humid.

Point to point transport will be an issue.

Why don't you just hire a two wheeler?

A car is preferable as not only it will help us get a driver as local guide who knows the turns and bends but also help to see the places en-route without thinking about luggage.

Agniva, I just completed a trip to Meghalaya. If it is only about knowing the road, then you do not need a driver for that. We did that without a local driver. Secondly, NE in general is a much safer place. People are not complicated. You can be reasonable sure about the safety of your belongings while traveling in Meghalaya.

I agree with Karikor in this respect. But you have to take a call depending on comfort and amount of luggage. Definitely it will be cheaper.

I met many travelers from south India on bikes during my own roadtrip there.

A small car along with driver will cost you around 2500 a day, while a two wheeler will be around 1500 a day.

Thanks, will definitely keep these in mind when planning the transport.

Now I need the accommodation contacts ASAP so that I can finalize the trip itinerary I posted if that seems OK to you.
