Hi All,

This is my first post in the forum. I have done partial bookings for my Meghalaya trip. (It took some days for my account to get activated so could not post my query earlier)

My plan is as follows.

13th May 2017 :- Arrive at Guwahati around 1pm. Will be staying that night in Guwahati. Booking done ( Cancellable). Will be visiting a friend in Guwahat.
14th May 2017 :- Pick up the self drive Car and proceed to Shillong. Stay at Shillong. Booking done ( Cancellable)
15th May 2017: Stay at Shilllong. Booking Done ( Cancellable)
16th May 2017: Stay at Sohra. Booking Done. ( Advance non refundable)
17th May 2017 : Stay at Sohra. Booking Done. ( Advance non refundable)
18th May 2017: Not yet planned.
19th May 2017: Not yet Planned
20th May 2017: return back to Guwahati and stay for the night ( Booking done . Cancellable)
21st May 2017: Kamakhya Darshan in the morning. Flight from Guwahati at 16:35.

Could someone (karikor ) please help me in planning the places to visit? I have gone through many of your replies to similar requests. But not able to plan correctly. Given the season and rains would have arrived what will be the advise on the places to visit please?
Some of the places are the usual suspects like the museum in Shillong, the sounds and smells of the Shillong street, Some cafes with Live music in Shillong , the waterfalls at Sohra , Nongriat hike , Mawlynnong , Dawki .

Any advise on any other offbeat places which can be visited. The state is small but looks like many many places to explore.

Did some more research from the various threads and came up with the below itinerary

13th May - Reach Guwahati at 1pm . Night Stay in Guwahati
14th May – Shillong sightseeing and halt in Shillong
15th May- Shillong – Mawphlang Sacred Forest, Mawjymbuin cave , Mawlyngbna. And back to Shillong
16th May- Maswami Caves, Nohakalikal Falls, Seven Sisters Falls . Halt at Sohra
17th May– Nogriat trek and halt at Sohra
18th May- mawlynnong , Riwai Root bridge , Dawki and Halt at Dawki
19th May -amlarem , thadlaskein, nartiang . Halt at Jowai
20th May -Jowai to Guwahati
21st May Kamakhya in the morning and catch the flight home at 16.30

Is the itinerary on 15th May doable? Or do I need to revamp my complete itinerary?

Hello SJA, I am planning to visit nongriat in the same time frame. Could you tell me the reason behind choosing sohra? I did not come across it in my homework and would love to know if I should add it to my list.

Surely Cherrapunjee must be in your itinerary?

Saiteja & SJA,

You should atleast keep half a day if not a full day for Sohra since it has started raining and the falls will be having water. Also keep some time for the caves.

@ SJA

You don't need to completely change your itinerary, just some changes. This is what I would suggest-

13th May - Reach Guwahati at 1pm . Night Stay in Guwahati
14th May – Shillong sightseeing and halt in Mawphlang
15th May- Mawphlang Sacred Forest, Mawjymbuin cave , Mawlyngbna. Proceed to Mawphanlur.
16th May- Spend the day in Mawphanlur. Proceed to Sohra. Halt at Sohra
17th May- Maswami Caves, Nohakalikal Falls, Seven Sisters Falls, caves etc . After lunch trek to Nongriat. Halt
18th May– Nongriat - Sohra- Mawlynnong- Dawki/Shnongpdeng. Halt
19th May -amlarem , thadlaskein, nartiang . Halt at Jowai/Ialong
20th May -Jowai to Guwahati
21st May Kamakhya in the morning and catch the flight home at 16.30

I thing is should be ok.

@karikor sure. I was reading about sohra and it does look interesting. Do you know any backpackers friendly places in sohra? Also, would I able to just pitch my tent somewhere?

You can check out BYTHEWAY in Sohra. It may suit you best.

Thanks a lot Karikor. Let me replan . One question. Is it not possible to have the base at Shillong and cover Mawphlang, Mawjymbuin caves, Mawlyngba? Stay options are more in Shillong and reduces the hassle of checking in checking out hence the question.

@SJA,

That is indeed possible. However you have to also take into account that daylight hours is lesser out here and travellling to and fro to the same place over and over again can be just as tiring as checking in and checking out. Plus you will cover the same distance and road twice everyday and don't forget it is a little different with all the winding and twisting roads.

Just a thought.
