Hi Sourav,

Do you recommend staying in Shillong for Christmas ? Are there special celebrations/rock concerts/fairs on the 25th of Dec ? As per what you suggested, after reaching Shillong on 24th, I would be heading out of Shillong to Mawlongbna on Sunday the 25th of Dec. DO you suggest that I stay put in Shillong for the Christmas ? Would there be transport since it an important festival day ? Also how do I go from Shillong to Mawlongbna cheaply (meaning no private cab booking).

You have a good point there, 25th may be a little problematic. So better that you stay put for that day in Shillong itself and enjoy the festival cheer. As for concerts and fairs, you usually will find them on 24th evening.

Thanks Karikor.

Here are the updates --

Day 1, Dec 22: Reach Guwahati at 9 AM. Shillong - Mawphlang (Halt at Maplepine)

Day 2, Dec 23: Sacred Groves & David Scott Trek - Sohra (Halt at By the Way dorms. The telephone number isn't reachable and when checked online, I found Green Valley lodge as a backup option. Yet to call them though)

Day 3, Dec 24: Sohra local sight seeing (Halt as above as on Day 2)

Day 4, Dec 25: Nongriat (Halt at a dorm close to Serene. I called up Mr Bryon and learnt that he doesn't offer rooms for one night. However he was generous enough to offer help in finding me a place somewhere nearby, provided I give him a call one day in advance)

Day 5, Dec 26: Mawlynnong - Shnongpdeng (Halt at Shnongpdeng. The number that was shared, is not reachable. I found Ha La Tyngkang as another option. However upon calling, I was denied a place to stay )

Day 6, Dec 27: Shillong local sight seeing and shopping (Halt at Royal Orchid aka Youth hostel. There's only one double room without attached bath available. I found another option, a dorm in Buddhist temple road. I've sent an inquiry)

Day 7, Dec 28: Guwahati. As of now I just have evening boat ride in my agenda. I cancelled my visit to Kamakhya due to some reasons. I'm still looking for ways to spend this day. (Halt - yet to find a place. I came across a home-stay offered by a Doctor's family. Got to check)

Day 8, Dec 29: Morning departure.

Saurav:

I sent an email to Maplepine at cp@culturalpursuits.com and it worked. Try this email address, or else you can probably use the contact number Karikor shared.

As of now, I too have no idea about transport. My plan is to reach Maplepine, meet some people and figure out the next steps.

And on your question of when I'll be reaching Shillong, I just shared my updated final itinerary.

Thanks Karikor. I'll give it a try.

Can you please me solve this confusion of mine -- Between end of plan of Day 4 and start of plan of Day 5, after ascending back the steps, will I've to take a ride from original place of start of trek to Shillong and then take a ride to my Day 5's plan of Dawki - Mawlynnong - Shnongpdeng? Or is there a way to bypass Shillong and directly go for it?

You can trek from Tyrna upto Mawsahew and then catch a bus/sumo to Sohra. From there you have two options:

1. Proceed to Shillong and then next morning catch bus/sumo to Mawlynnong/Dawki.

2. Halt at Sohra for one more night and then catch bus/sumo to Mawlynnong/Dawki.

Just to be safe, I would suggest you opt Option 1. However, you can confirm from your Sohra accommodation, whether option 2 is viable on that particular day.

Hi karikor,

My train scheduled time to Reach Guwahati is 4:30 am. Assuming that I get the earliest cab by 6 am, I plan to be in Shillong on 24th by 10 am.

@ AK - I'll be reaching Shillong on 24th...and plan to stay there for the day as it's Christmas eve and make merry :-) However if I get a bus from Shillong to Mawlongbna on 25th early morning then I'll proceed, else donno...may stay back in Shillong or take a day trip to somewhere.
Check out this one for DD Root Bridge https://indiahikes.com/double-decker-root-bridge-trek/
Also (to be verified as correct by karikor) From Nongrait goto Sohra , catch a cab to laitlyngkot (200/-). then another taxi to Dawki (200/-).
BTW there is another Youth Hostel near Police Bazar. Orchid Lodge hold a license from YHAI but YHAI also has it's own hostel and when I called them they said that there is room. Here is the number 0364 222 2246.

My somewhat final itinerary looks like this

24th Dec - Guwahati - Shillong - Sightseeing/Festive spirit !!

25th Dec - Mawlongbna ( Mawsynram would be about 60km and then 15km to Mawlyngbna) - bus leaves at 6 am for Mawlongbna from Shilong. Would there be a bus on 25th Christmas day morning ??? What other options do I have to reach Mawlongbna ? Accomodation at Mawlongbna is also a ?

26th Dec- Mawphlang (Mawphlang - Tents at Maplepine Farms) - How to reach Mawlongbna to Mawphlang ? Texted Maplepine -- they do not have any accommodation available. What are the other options of staying in Mawphlang??

27th Dec -Sacred Groves & David Scott Trek - Sohra (Sohra - Dorms at By the Way) - David Scott Trek is of 16 Kms -- is it doable in a day ?? Sohra sightseeing -- will there be time ??
[You can start from Kyrdem Falls, move up to Khoh-Ramhah-Thangkharang Park-Noh Sngithiang Falls-co-Park-Mawsmai Cave- Have lunch in saitsohpen (Avron Restuarant)- Nohkalikai falls- Sohra Market-Ram Krishna Mission- Dain thlen falls (if possible)-Wah kaba falls]

28th Dec- Nongriat (Nongriat - Serene homestay). Mr. Byron said he may be able to arrange some accommodation if I tell him a day in advance. Leave 6 am to catch cab to Sohra market then taxi to laitlyngkot (200/-). then another taxi to Dawki (200/-).

29th Dec- Mawlynnong - Shnongpdeng (Tents at riverside) - tents available at Rs. 700/- but did not get the contact numbers of those guys.
In Mawlynnong.[You can also stay in Laitumkhrah, it is center of schools and colleges, so many shops and places to eat nearby. For clean rooms and good parking space and good building at very good prices, Yalana is best. Else try Hotel Prakash. Old building smaller rooms. Basic facilities. Both have restaurants.]

30th Dec- Tyrchi Falls - Laitlum - Shillong - Transport from Shnongpdeng to Shillong ? Shilong sightseeing -- whatever is left of it.

I have copy pasted some previous posts by karikor to enrich the data !!

24th Dec - Guwahati - Shillong - Sightseeing/Festive spirit !!
Looks good

25th Dec - Mawlongbna ( Mawsynram would be about 60km and then 15km to Mawlyngbna) - bus leaves at 6 am for Mawlongbna from Shilong. Would there be a bus on 25th Christmas day morning ??? What other options do I have to reach Mawlongbna ? Accomodation at Mawlongbna is also a ?
I've read that Meghalaya tourism department organizes day tour to Mawsynram. Why don't you check that out?

26th Dec- Mawphlang (Mawphlang - Tents at Maplepine Farms) - How to reach Mawlongbna to Mawphlang ? Texted Maplepine -- they do not have any accommodation available. What are the other options of staying in Mawphlang??If you happen to find out other options, please let me know. My booking is still awaiting confirmation and would like to have some backups.

I think it is doable in a day. I read that it takes about 5 hours for an average fit person. And for Sohra local sightseeing, I think you'd have run out of energy

This is a day in the itinerary (both yours and mine), that I'm super confused about. Glad that you could find out some information for the journey from Sohra to Dawki. My question is, when will you leave Serene home-stay to catch the 6 AM cab to Sohra? Citing facts from Karikor's TR, it is a 2 hours trek from Nongriat to Tyrna and __ hours (requesting Karikor to help fill the blank) from Tyrna to Mawsahew.

Did you try the two contact numbers that Karikor shared for Shnongpdeng? I tried one and there was no response. I'll be ringing up the second one tomorrow.

30th Dec- Tyrchi Falls - Laitlum - Shillong - Transport from Shnongpdeng to Shillong ? Shilong sightseeing -- whatever is left of it.
After having checked reviews and photographs of Tyrchi Falls anf Laitlum, I'm so tempted to go visit both these places How do you plan to cover these two? I assume that there are no buses / sumo.

Thanks again for the inputs, Karikor. But wouldn't it add another extra day in the itinerary? The current outline was to end Day 4 in Nongriat and begin Day 5 with the onward journey to Dawki. Please give some ideas to mitigate this.

Saurav:

I forgot to thank you for sharing the Double Decker root bridge trek trip article. It was helpful. Also, thanks for throwing some light on the youth hostel part since I never knew that there existed two separate hostels; YHAI website doesn't list the other one. I'll promptly ring them up tomorrow morning. I just hope that I too find a room. Fingers crossed.

My somewhat final itinerary looks like this

24th Dec - Guwahati - Shillong - Sightseeing/Festive spirit !!

If you are reaching that early, you might as well proceed to Mawlongbna on 24th itself. Catch a Sumo to Mawsynram and then take a local shared taxi to Mawlongbna

Contact for Mawlongbna tents/rooms- 9615170025

26th Dec- Mawphlang (Mawphlang - Tents at Maplepine Farms) - How to reach Mawlongbna to Mawphlang ? Texted Maplepine -- they do not have any accommodation available. What are the other options of staying in Mawphlang??

Mawphlang is on the way to Mawsynram. So take the Mawsynram/Mawlyngbna Sumo or bus and get down at Mawphlang.

As for stay at Mawphlang -

you can also ask the mawphlang guides for local homestays in mawphlang .

Guides- 9863082456/8014774665

You don't have to cover all the places, you can choose a few places to visit in Sohra.

If taxi is available from Sohra to laitlyngkot, then that's a good plan.

29th Dec- Mawlynnong - Shnongpdeng (Tents at riverside) - tents available at Rs. 700/- but did not get the contact numbers of those guys.

Have you called up the numbers I shared

In Mawlynnong.[You can also stay in Laitumkhrah, it is center of schools and colleges, so many shops and places to eat nearby. For clean rooms and good parking space and good building at very good prices, Yalana is best. Else try Hotel Prakash. Old building smaller rooms. Basic facilities. Both have restaurants.]

This is Laitumkhrah, Shillong not Mawlynnong

30th Dec- Tyrchi Falls - Laitlum - Shillong - Transport from Shnongpdeng to Shillong ? Shilong sightseeing -- whatever is left of it.

You can take a Sumo up to Amlarem then to Jowai then from Jowai up to Shillong. The reason I kept this route is I initially thought you will have a dedicated car or bike with you. You still can get down at Amlarem and check out Tyrchi falls.
