I went through a few suggestions posted by Karikor, and other members, then I picked this one to customize for myself.

Day 1: Train from Kolkata
Day 2: Reach Guwahati by 9.30am. Stay for the day. And visit Kamakhya temple.
Day3: Guwahati to shillong
Day 4: Shillong sightseeing including Laitlum
Day 5: Shillong to Sohra including Mawphlang Sacred Groves. Sohra sightseeing. Halt
Day 6- Double Decker Trek. Halt
Day 7: Sohra - Mawlynnong - Shnongpdeng. Halt
Day 8: Shnongpdeng - Amlarem (Krangsuri)- Jowai-Guwahati
Day 9: Flight from Guwahati, around 12 noon

I will visit there in March, with my family. No. of members will be 6, including 2 senior citizens and one child (5yrs). Please suggest if I have chosen the right one.

There is no hard constraint in budget, it will be 10-12k per head approx. I

I will book a car for the whole trip, as suggested in almost all the suggestion, so a contact of a cab driver is also I will be looking for, soon.

Questions:
1. Umiam lake possible on Day 2?
2. Please suggest the places in between Shillong, sohra and Shnongpdeng, so that i can browse and plan
3. Do we need to travel too much in Day 8, as map suggests, then we can move to some other place enroute jowai on Day 7 itself, if that is advisable.

Suchintya, why don't you proceed to Shillong on Day 2 itself. Umiam lake very much possible.

2. Please suggest the places in between Shillong, sohra and Shnongpdeng, so that i can browse and plan
You have lots of time, we can further improve the itinerary. Please have a look at Suparna Acharya's itinerary and we can build up from that.

3. Do we need to travel too much in Day 8, as map suggests, then we can move to some other place enroute jowai on Day 7 itself, if that is advisable.
Yes travel will be too much. I suggest halting the night at Jowai or Thadlaskein.

Since you have plenty of days to plan, I am sure we can do it well.

Thumbs up

1. Suchintya, why don't you proceed to Shillong on Day 2 itself. Umiam lake very much possible.
Kamakhya temple is one of the highest priorities for my parents. Hence, I kept a full day for secured and hassle free visit to the temple.
I will move to shillong , if it is completed, by lunch.

Yes, I went through a part of Suparna Acharya's Travelouge, it's pretty informative, and beautifully written in detail. I will go through the rest for sure

3. I suggest halting the night at Jowai or Thadlaskein
