Hello,

Need help in deciding on a trip to Meghalaya. Would like to visit Shillong, Cherrapunji (Sohra) and trek to the double decker bridge for sure. Usually plan out my India trips from various posting on IndiaMike and other websites. However, afraid whether it is already late in terms of reserving hotels in the area and air tickets from Delhi. Am already finding Zoom cars not available. So want to reserve hotels and air tickets ASAP.

A) Kindly critique the itinerary below and suggest improvements:
25th Dec' arrive 1:30 pm at Guwahati, public transport to Shillong
26th Cab to Sohra, with stops on way. Stay Sohra
27th Trek to double decker bridge and back. Stay Sohra
28th Trip to Dawki possibly. Stay Sohra
29th Public transport to Shillong. Stay Sohra
30th Shillong. Stay Shillong
31st Pobitora Rhino Sanctuary, Assam. Stay Guwahati or Pobitora
1st Jan: depart 1:30 pm to Delhi

We are specifically worried whether B) there will be any closures of sights/restaurants/public-transport because of the holidays

C)And, whether accommodation can still be managed in Sohra and Shillong for about 2,000 to 3,000 INR per day.

Thank you.

Note: It will be just 2 of us, and can travel by public transport and splurge on a cab if there are sights to visit on way. Dawki is not a must for us.

December end is rush season for Meghalaya tourism and apart from the 25th, I don't think you have anything to worry about.

Accommodation may be a little tricky as most of the better places would be booked by now. Still no harm in trying.

As for your itinerary , this is what I would suggest-

25th Dec' arrive 1:30 pm at Guwahati, public transport to Shillong
26th Dec Transfer to Mawlyngbna. On route check out the Mawphlang Sacred Groves. Halt at Mawlyngbna/Mawphlang or if you want to save daylight hours proceed to Sohra and Halt.
27th Sohra sightseeing. Stay Sohra
28th Trek to double decker bridge and back. Stay Sohra
29th Trip to Mawlynnong , Dawki and Shnongpdeng. Halt at Shnongpdeng
30th Public transport to Jowai. Halt at Jowai
31st From Jowai proceed straight to Pobitora Rhino Sanctuary, Assam. Stay Guwahati or Pobitora
1st Jan: depart 1:30 pm to Delhi

Also I suggest that you opt for shared vehicles only on 25th and 31st and 1st. Other days, I suggest you either hire a cab or a motorbike.

So far we have finalized:
25th Dec Stay at Guwahati (since, hotels for 25th at Shillong are very expensive), evening river cruise. Or, at Pobitoro - need to identify a clean moderate accommodation.
26th Pobitoro morning safari. Public transport from Guwahati to Shillong.
27th Sohra and back by Meghalaya Tourism
28th Mawlyngbna and back. (Meghalaya Tourism's tour is to Mawsynram, which seems close to Mawlyngbna)
29th Trip to Mawlynnong , Dawki and Shnongpdeng. Halt at Shnongpdeng
30th Public transport to Jowai. Halt at Jowai
31st From Jowai to Shillong. Possibly night at Guwahati.
1st Jan: Afternoon fly out of Guwahati

Ok.

Let me give you some pointers.

Sohra trip with Meg Tourism will miss out on some good spots.

Meg Tourism trips to Mawsynram is irregular. Besides how will you come back to Shillong from Mawlyngbna.

From Jowai you can go directly to Guwahati. No need to come back to Shillong.

Obviously, this part of our trip isn't the most researched

We didn't find any accommodation around Sohra. While we liked the double decker living bridge pictures very much. We aren't so sure about the numerous concrete steps leading to and from the bridge. Hence, we are doing Sohra as a day trip.
We still could take a private trip to Sohra and back. Could you be kind enough to let us know the spots we could visit other than that of Meg Tourism, if do Sohra on our own?

We called Meghalaya Tourism and they gave the impression, they will have all the tours running last week of December. Of course, we will know for sure when we get to Shillong on 26th. Won't their Mawsynram tour visit Mawlyngbna?

Good to know we could travel to Guwahati from Jowai directly. Hopefully by public transport.

Appreciate your pointers very much.

Dani,

It would be so sad if you would have to leave out the double decker as its one of those once in a life time experiences. Staying in Nongriat would set you back by just 300-500 bucks. Also things that you will miss out if you opt for Meg tourism would be the Garden of Caves, Dain Thlen Falls, Arwah Cave, Kynrem falls, apart from the hidden jewels like the Wei Sawdong Falls, Lyngksiar falls, Mawsawa falls, Diengdoh Falls, Mawmluh cave, etc. You can try out Shabin Guest House or Green Valley Lodge.

I do not think the Meg Tourism guys will cover Mawlyngbna, yes they will cover 2-3 spots as Mawsynram is the highest rainfall in the world. Besides Meg Tourism are notorious for cancelling trips if not enough tourist opt for it. Besides, Mawlyngbna is a whole day affair.

I would suggest though that you infact hire a motorbike or scooty. Will save you a lot of headaches. In Shillong you can try out Travellers Nest or maybe even opt to stay at the Youth Hostel or YMCA. Will save you some bucks I'm sure.
