I have been putting this Trip Report off for quite sometime and well today I figured that I should not procrastinate any longer but to atleast start with an introductory post.

Well it was a sunny winter morning on the 29th of December, 2013, just after Christmas and me and a few friends thought that we should end the year with a short trip to some place which none of us had ever visited. So me being me, came up with the idea of visiting Mawthadraishan and its pools. However, I only came to know later how wrong I had been the entire time.

Mawthadraishan is a Community & Rural Development Block in Mairang Civil Sub-Division under West Khasi Hills District. It is located approximately about 75 km from Shillong. The peak in Mawthadraishan is the highest in the district and once on top, you can view Bangladesh to the South, Khasi Hills to the East, Garo Hills to the West & even the Himalayas on a clear day to the North.

Now the biggest mistake I had done that day was to take my four other friends along for the trip in my Maruti A-Star and actually leave my Mahindra Isuzu 550 4x4 Jeep at home.

Anyway we started the trip from Shillong at 9am sharp. Here are photos in sequence of our trip.

The famous Shillong Bazaar Bus infront of us in Upper Shillong area.

Well since all five of us were all guys, we did not bother to pack lunch or water or any food items. Then 15km into the trip, just before reaching Mawkriah, we realized that we may get stuck in some remote place with only hunger as our company. Hence at 9.30 am, we knocked on the doors of Susie's Restaurant in Mawkriah , whose signboard read 'CLOSED', hoping against all hope for some luck. And well we were in luck. Susie & her German husband had just cooked some gigantic Chicken meatballs. We got 5 of them with Chicken Chow. It was 10am by the time we left the place.

After passing Mairang, we came across the Kynshi River. A major river/stream in West Khasi Hills District.

The Kyshi River flows just beside the Shillong-Nongstoin highway. In a few places we came across suspension bridges like the one below.

Then when we reach Nongshillong, we saw a tiny little signboard that indicated that Mawthadraishan peak was to the right. It was a kutcha road (this was when I started regretting not bringing the jeep), it was pretty bad and well the peak was 4km uphill from the intersection.
