Hi,

I want to witness copious rains, lush greenery and roaring waterfalls in Meghalaya. Can anyone please clarify which month would be ideal for this: July or August. I am very keen about rains. Earlier, I visited Meghalaya during 1st week of March 2015. The scenery, though beautiful, was missing a lot of drama and hues of green; waterfalls were empty too.

The plan is to fly to Shillong and reach one of the traveller's nests (http://villagegetaways.in/) that has waterfalls and living root bridges nearby. The idea is to settle down for a couple of days, enjoy rains and explore slowly. Please let me know if there would be any safety concerns for a solo female traveler.

Then, I want to trek down to Nohkalikai waterfalls, visit Krang shuri waterfalls, Nongkhnum island and other waterfalls. I am checking with Nature Hunt Eco camps for making all cab and guide arrangements. I, along with my friends, traveled with Nature Hunt in 2015 and then it was a very good experience. This time however, I will be traveling solo. Kindly let me know any other great waterfalls that I must not miss.

Thanks a lot

July is usually the rainier of the two. But I would recommend August. No issues with travelling solo. I am not so sure about tour operators, but i'm sure with a good driver around, you will not have any issues. If you plan to explore Sohra and its waterfalls more, you can check out this link: https://www.facebook.com/Sohra2day/

Maybe all you will need is a guide who are from that location only who will know plenty more hidden treasures.

Thanks Karikor for the link . It is very helpful. Based on what you said, I will travel in August only. And you put my thoughts in exact words. I will ask for a guide who allows me to explore hidden places.

My point being is that when you go to Mawphlang, you will get a local guide from there itself, Mawlynnong, same case Sohra also. By doing that, you will contribute to the local economy of that place and also these guys are born and brought up from that village, they will definitely know better than even a guide from Shillong when it comes to their area.

Post Motor bike or local transport?

Hi,
I am travelling from 8th - 16th August to Guwahati; planning to only cover bits & pieces of Meghalaya in this duration.
1. Do you think renting a motorbike is a feasible option in the moonsoons? Also, some insights on road conditions / prices / availability.
2. Any context on the local transport (bus/shared cabs, etc) availability / plausibility / reach within the state.
3. Any list of local guides & their contact numbers will be appreciated. I did check out the above link shared by Karikor sir

Siddarth,

Road conditions in the state are generally good. So biking will be no issues what so ever. Local transport is available but may effect your plans.

Plenty of local guides for different locations. Guides in Mawphlang, guides in Mawlyngbna, guides in Mawlynnong area etc.
