Me & my friend (with wives) are planning to trip Shillong in October 2012. We will reach Shillong from agartala on 23 rd of Oct.We will check out on 27th.I have planned to stay in Shillong itself as we cant afford to stay in cherrapunjee neither we can hire private vehicles for sight seeing.I have gathered some information from Internet and planned my itinerary as follows.

Bus from Agartala on 22nd Oct and reach Shillong on next day evening.Night stay at a budget hotel like White orchid guest house/hotel rainbow.

24rd Oct Shillong sightseeing (MTDC conducted tour service)
25th Oct Cherrapunjee day tour by MTDC
26th Oct Not planned yet.
27th Oct Chk out and Bus from shillong to guwahati

Now my questions are

1. What are the bus timings and fare from agartala to shillong?total journey time?
2. I have White Orchid guest house/hotel rainbow in mind for budget stay. Can anyone inform me about other options( not too far from police bazar area) I can afford 1000/- maximum per night.
3.Should I go to Mawsynram tour package(conducted by MTDC) or mawlynnongon 3rd day (26th OCT)? Which one will be better? Any suggestions?
If mawlynnong then what would be the cheapest way to go there?I can spend 1500/- for transportation for that day.
4.Is conducted tour is enough to make the most of cherra?
5. Are there any unique product that I can shop from Meghalaya.
6.What will be the weather then? Should I take woolen/raincoat etc?
7. Can I find any Bengali food restaurant there? Can I afford full day meal (breakfast, lunch and dinner) within 300/-per person?

Sorry for too much queries. but you know I want my trip with a foolproof plan. I am a nature lover and love to travel. Any modifications or suggestions about my queries will be hugely appreciated.

CA Note - Your thread has been moved to the "Meghalaya" forum. Hopefully it will attract better response here.

For some expert opinion, you need Karikor's help. It seems He is the brand ambassador of Meghalaya

by the way, your title confused me(as to many other) that you are giving some inputs of how to plan for budget trip to Meghalaya but it turned other way round. that why you got instant 100 views

Dear Illuminated,

Coming to your doubts.

1. I will have to check up on that one else you can simply google for the information.

2. You can try JK International or Hotel Grace, which are in Police Bazaar near Meghalaya Transport Corporation bus stand and Meghalaya Tourist Development Corporation counter. Remember Hotel tariff in Shillong is always high, so even if you pay 1000/- per night, don’t expect much. White Orchid is in Lachumiere, 2km from Police Bazaar.

3. If the Mawsynram trip includes Jakrem Hotsprings, then OK. Because Mawsynram has nothing much to offer. Else stick to Mawlynnong.

4. The conducted tour will at 8am and end by 4pm. They will take you to 8 spots. If you want anything more than that, then you will have to stay in Cherrapunjee.

5. In Shillong, you can check the local silk products for both Ladies and gents shawls. Some cane and bamboo products, Local organic tea, and try to get the best pure turmeric made from a village called Lakadong. From Cherrapunjee, get your hands on pure honey.

6. The weather will be very pleasant. Monsoon would have ended in end Spetember/Beginning October. However carry a light sweater and an umbrella just in case.

7. There are many Bengali restaurants near the MTC bus stand. One next to it by the name Suruchi, One opposite it Arun Hotel, and one below Hotel JK International which is also good. But how much the rates per meal, will depend on how much and what you eat?

Check out http://megtourism.gov.in/packagetours.html for information on tour packages by MTDC.

@samjrin As it was my first post in IM I was confused about what to write in title bar. I only noticed that after posting the thread and by that time it was not editable.and your thread link was too enjoyable.

@karikor Thanks Karikor. You are always helpful as I have seen your other posts too. The explanations is good for me.Can you clear some more doubts?

As far my knowledge go there is no conducted tour for Mawlynnong so If I book a private vehicle for Mawlynnong ( and say for Cherrapunjee also) what would be the approximate cost? can you guide me about the routes for that two days?I mean from where should I start and where to go in more convinient way?

I was considerd hotel yalana for cheapest accomodation but cancelled it later as it is too far from the main area. Is white orchide is also too far from police bazar. Cant we cover that by walking for getting around (or say dinner @9pm)or can we get some resturant Lachumiere area itself? I checked your hotel options I will surely look after that if my budget permits.

Any help will be appriciable.

@ Illuminated:

If you are hiring a cab for visiting places then you can either contact Khasi Hills Tourist Taxi Stand, Police Bazar, Ph 9863023694 and find out the rates or ask the hotel you are staying about the rates. Compare both and choose.

As for routes.

In Cherrapunjee:
you can start from Kyrdem Falls, move up to Khoh-Ramhah-Thangkharang Park-Noh Sngithiang Falls-co-Park-Mawsmai Cave- Have lunch in saitsohpen (Avron Restuarant)- Nohkalikai falls- Sohra Market-Ram Krishna Mission- Dain thlen falls (if possible)-Wah kaba falls- Shillong

In Mawlynnong & Shillong, follow the noraml route.

You can also stay in Laitumkhrah, it is center of schools and colleges, so many shops and places to eat nearby. For clean rooms and good parking space and good building at very good prices, Yalana is best. Else try Hotel Prakash. Old building smaller rooms. Basic facilities. Both have restaurants. But may be more expensive than the Bengali restaurants in Police Bazaar.

Lachumiere is a residential colony, so it will be difficult to even locate shops nearby.

Thanks Karikor for the much needed help. I am hesitating to choose yalana or others distant options because I have conducted tour package (by MTDC) in mind. Then it will be a hectic to book the tours, reach for that at early morning, coming back to hotel. All will go in vain if I save 300 rs per day for hotel and ended up giving that money to autoricksaw or something like that. Any idea about the transportation and charges for these little distances or we have cover to that by walking only?

Well shared taxi from Laitumkhrah to Police Bazaar is around Rs 15. Booked taxi is Rs. 60. JNNRUM buses are Rs. 5 (very efficient). Only thing is since you have to reach the MTDC counter early in the morning, then definitely staying around Police Bazaar is a much wiser option.

Hi Illuminated, I presume your visit went well. I am planning a similar trip in Dec. end. Can you give me details (location/route/price) of the trip. Also did you undertake the trek at Cherrapunjee to Root bridge(I think that is the name of the place)?

Hello cycloopss, Welcome to IM. I think it will be difficult to cover all these places in half day. MTDC have conducted tours and its a very good option. I availed it when I was there in Shillong. You can check their package here http://megtourism.gov.in/packagetours.html

Hi mate,

I'm planning a trip to Cherrapunji and my itinerary is as below. Pls advise if its doable

Day - 1 (May-11): Arrive in Guwahati by 12pm. Proceed to Cherrapunji. Overnight Stay at Cherrapunji

Day - 2 (May -12): Cherrapunji local sightseeing(waterfalls) and Nongriat trek. Overnight stay at Nongriat.

Day -3 (May -13): Proceed to ScnongPdeng - Dawki for some Adventure activities and then visit Mawlynnong. Overnight stay at Mawlynnong.

Day -4 (May -14): Start to Guwahati to catch flight in the evening.

A couple of queries -

a. would you suggest spending an entire day for Dawki & Mawlynnong village? or Just a half day trip (early start) and return to Cherrapunji / Shillong?

b. In case of an overnight stay in Mawlynnong village, are there affordable homestays there?

Thanks & best regards
Vishwa

This is pretty much doable Vishwa! Looks short and Sweet.

Though I would recommend you to trek to a few waterfalls when in Nongriat. For that you might have to cut down your local sight seeings in Sohra. But a couple of falls can be visited from Nongriat only.
So on May 12, instead of Sight Seeing in Sohra, you head straight to Nongrat really early in the morning.
After staying overnight at Nongriat, On May 13 maybe crunch a few Sohra Sightseeings[Caves], and head to Dawki-Mawlynnong.

The guesthouses should cost you from around 1k, and expect basic amenities.

Have a great time tripping!

Cyclooppss,

If you plan to spend the whole day sightseeing, it is very much feasible. Infact you can add Arwah caves and foot of Kynrem falls as well. You can proceed in the following order: Wah kaba falls, Dainthlen falls, Arwah caves, Eco park, Mawsmai cave, Nohsngithiang Park, Thangkharang Park, Khoh Ramhah and lastly foot of Kynrem Falls.

However, if you plan to stay half a day extra, then I would suggest the Garden of Caves at Laitmasiang as well. Also lately in the past 6-7 months many more places have been discovered in and around sohra, some of them have been shown in the link below. Perhaps you may be interested to have a look.
