Cherrapunjee - end of July - Info and trekking partner

Hello everyone, I am based in Guwahati for 2.5 months. I’ve had the misfortune (?) of being here during the monsoon season when most, if not all, national parks are closed due to flooding. I have come to Assam for an internship program and therefore have not had as much time as I would’ve liked to explore. But to get to the point, I have 2 weeks left before I head to Nepal for another 2 weeks and then back home (Bulgaria). I am interested in getting more information about trekking in Cherrapunjee, Meghalaya. If I could find a trekking partner too, it would be fantastic. I am planning to make the trip in the period between 23 July and 30 July. Also, I am on a pretty tight budget. My general questions and concerns are the following: - Can anyone please suggest a possible 4 day itinerary? (I am not restricted to Cherrapunjee. Dawki or Mawlynong also possible) - Is solo trekking advisable? If not, how much would it cost to hire a guide? Can you recommend someone? - Are there any good maps? If not, is the area well sign-posted, or sign-posted at all? - What is the cheapest accommodation available? Is advanced booking necessary? – I have heard that accommodation could be quite pricy. I’m really looking forward to your reply, Regards, Martin

Hi Martin,

There is a lot of scope for trekking however I don't know how comfortable you would be doing it in the rains. By the way what is your budget that you have with you for these 4 days? Based on that, maybe I can help suggest some thing.

Hey Karikor,

I do realize it's not the best time to go trekking but I simply have to hope for the best

Budget would be around Rs. 1000 per day. Not sure whether this would even cover my accommodation. I'll spend only one night in Cherrapunjee if there are no cheap alternatives.

As for Shillong,

Check out :
http://megtourism.gov.in/hotels/yalana.pdf

It is pretty reasonable and also very clean compared to other hotels at this price range and located in the educational center of the city. At par with all the other popular hotels in Shillong. There are many good cafes and restaurants in the area. But remember you will have to book well in advance as the hotel is always out of vacancy.
