An X visa is formally known as an "Entry" Visa. On the visa itself, they put "X" in the "type" field, and most people call it an "X visa"

X Visa

Quick X/entry visa question...

What else is not allowed on this visa? Would I be allowed to volunteer for free at an orphanage while on the entry visa? Also, I was hoping to study Hindi for the first 3-4 months that I'm in India...would that be allowed as long as it was not for academic credit?

Thanks in advance!

Volunteering (with a recognized NGO or similar organization) requires an employment visa;* studying (with a recognized educational institution) requires a student visa.

* Note the Employment Visa currently requires a minimum annual wage of US$ 25,000; this is waived for accepted volunteers, who now instead are not allowed recompensation of more than Rs. 10,000/month.

I don't believe the X/Entry visa will allow you any of this, no. (Of course I suppose no one will mind much if you take some informal Hindi classes with someone a few hours a week. But any serious studies, no, technically at least not allowed to you, as far as I know. The wisdom of volunteering these days when you're not allowed it I'd say is questionable, at best. The Indian authorities take an ever-dimmer view of abusing your visa conditions.)

You say in another post you intend to apply for PIO later, I think that should allow you more rights. Not sure precisely if that includes the right to study and work, anyone? But so for your first year or however long it takes before you can apply for PIO, I think on the X Visa you'll essentially only be allowed to be there as your spouse's spouse.

Study also:

http://www.immigrationindia.nic.in/,
http://www.mha.nic.in/, notably currently its http://mha.nic.in/ForeigDiv/ForeigHome.html,
and for those of Indian backgrounds over the past few generations, http://moia.gov.in/.

The latter should get into matters of PIO and OCI and stuff at quite some length.

My embassy told my Indian partner that whether I (as a foreigner) could work or not work in India on a X visa depends on what the local FRO allows, rather than a blanket policy. Has anyone ever heard of this?

No. It is a common idea that people can work on an X visa, and probably foreigners of Indian origin who can completely blend in may find it easy, but if you see the MHA stuff, you will find that it is not allowed.

It is a problem that not all staff know the regulations.

It should be a hop, skip and a jump to get your PIO if you already have an X Visa, and this will allow you to work or volunteer. Not sure about studying.
