Criminal Clearance Certificate

I am in a process of obtaining a Portuguese Passport for my Spouse and I have been asked to obtain a Criminal Clearance Certificate stating from a CID Branch that there is No Criminal Convictions on Record... I need this to be obtained from Mumbai CID as she lived there. Can anybody guide or give me some clues as to where I start the process or whom do I approach and what are the requirements? Any sugestions and clues would be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance...

I needed something similar for some kind of visa extension. I went to the police station in my remote small town, and though I had to come back several times and wait till the SHO turned up, finally he gave me a letter declaring that there are no criminal complaints against me. The Indian police are familiar with providing this "character certificate" and it is not difficult other than the usual waiting and inconvenience of Indian offices.

If your location is what it is in the profile, then the first stop to get info should be the Indian Consulate. Also, because India does not allow dual nationality, you may be asked for surrender of Indian passport and relinquishing of Indian citizenship.
