Converting to X Visa after marriage - Currently on an employment visa

Hi,

I am currently in India on an employment visa, and living in Pune. I will be getting married on 2nd June and I am wondering how I go about converting to an X visa.

Can this be done in Pune?

A marriage based X visa does not allow you to work in India. So the best is to just get married, get the marriage registered and let be (wait) for a year atleast. Then apply for a PIO and you can work legally here without needing an E visa. If your E visa comes up for renewal in the interim, just get it extended as is.

Sorry I realised I had explained fully before pressing submit.

I am currently on an Employment visa that expires on 22nd June. I will also be finishing my contract with my company on the expiry of my visa.

I think you start out at your FRO. That's wherever you went to register.

They may send you to Delhi, but you have to start with them. Only a month! Go soon, if not tomorrow!

Hi haylou

I was wondering if you have managed to register your marriage and initiated the visa conversion process?

I am an Indian married to an Australian citizen who is here on an employment visa valid till August. We have recently applied to the registration office but I'm afraid we won't have enough time to convert the visa when we get the registration certificate.

We have vague knowledge on the process and would appreciate if you can share any information/ advice in this matter.

All the best!

Please be clearer about your situation, and what it is you need to know. For instance, registration could mean marriage or residence (or any of several other things). It is helpful also to know how, in what country, and when your marriage took place.

Not prying! personal information is not being asked for: just the skeleton of simple facts on which advice can be built.

Adding to Nick's advice, local FRO & Marriage registration offices may differ in time and paperwork.

Hi nick, nycank

sorry about the delayed reply. for some reason i did not receive the notification in my email.

me and my partner have applied to register our marriage and will be signing the papers in mumbai around mid july.

my partner is currently employed here and i believe she needs to give up her employment in order to apply for an x visa.

what i need to know is the complete process of converting the visa. do we need to go the frro or is it mandatory to go to the ministry of home affairs in delhi for this? what are the documents required? do they give her an extension first or convert it immediately?

we would prefer to convert her visa before it expires in august but i don't know if that gives us enough time to go through all the steps.

i appreciate your help and hope you can answer some of these questions.

thanks!

As far as I know, you should always go to your local FRO or FRRO. If you need to go to Delhi, they will send you there.

For those of us lucky enough to live within the "local" jurisdiction of an FRRO, they can handle most stuff as these are Ministry people.

An X visa does not allow employment.

Online form http://indianfrro.gov.in/frro/menufrro.jsp?t4g=5YRAI2OF for Mumbai FRRO. As for registering an existing marriage (other than SMA) it is either Churchgate Area or Bandra a.k.a Vandre I doubt the form above is good for converting the visa to X.

http://mha.nic.in/foreigDiv/PwrDlgtFRRO.html lists the types of things an FRO/FRRO are allowed to do now locally.

Just to update on my situation - as I had a few commitments that came up we decided that it was easiest for me to travel back to the UK and process my visa from there.

I filed my application yesterday in person at the centre in Victoria, however the guy on the counter said that I should only apply for a 6 month X visa.

His explanation for this was that as we had only been married for a month they may refuse a 12 month visa.

Hi Nick,

Namaste!

I happened to read a post of yours which says you are married to an Indian.

I have a question which is a lil different than this post. I am an Indian girl and my husband is Finnish. I came to India before him and now he will join me soon. However, I would like to know if he can get the residence permit since he is ma dear hubby and also if he would have problems working in India? as in does this residence permit also allows him to work.

I hope you will be able to help me with this question,

Dankuwell,

Shaubita

You have posted a similar query in another thread. Please avoid posting same queries in multiple threads.

Jusgt to answer your question, another question?

how long have you been married. If for more than a year, apply for a PIO for him, then he can come to India and work as well. If less than a year, he can get an X visa, but not work here.

Hi Narendra,

Thanks for your reply and sorry for my repeated post but the other one was more to the specific person.

I was a little nervous when I came to know that it is not easy for foreigners to work in India.

I am married for one and half years luckily.

Thanks very much in advance for your help,
