Kolhapur - ummm been ages since I went there. My family roots are from near Kolhapur but its been ages since I last went as a child. From what I recollect Kolhapur was just the standard mid-sized Indian town - all the best parts and un was in the villages around it.

Maybe next year ... hmmmm.

As for the Marathas - bollocks. Only an Indian is an true Indian and it matters not if you are a North Indian or South Indian or whatever. I smell a troll once again !

I have been a frequent visitor to Pune.
What strikes me most, is the friendly and happy maharashtrian.
If it wasn't for their friendly attitude, Mumbai would not have been what it is today. (Of course, Bal T came along much later & he is surely on his way too) What with all the states of India represented in one place!

I lived in Mumbai and Pune for six months last year and MAHARASHTRA ROCKS! Did anyone mention Ahmednager? Igatpuri? Matheran? Nothing is wrong with Maharasthra. See my all-Maharashtra photos under

under the titles "Alone among the caves: Ajanta-Ellora"
"Nine Days in Mumbai," "Pilgrimage to Shirdi," "A Marathi Navratri," "Planet Pune," and "The Great Marathi Paper Chase."

Til bol gaye, mithai mithai boliyae.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with Maharashtra!
Its just because international tourtists only visit Ajanta-Ellora and use Mumbai only as a gateway city for goa or as a stopover before moving to other cities.
The tourism industry here in Maharashtra flourish not due to international tourist but due to the domestic (within the state) tourism. If you want a proof try places like Mahabaleshwar, Khandala, Alibag, Ganpatipule, Tarkarli and the likes on weekends.
While zooming past by the Konkan railway from Mumbai to Goa through numerous tunnels, people just overlook the konkan in hurry to reach the sandy (& crowded) beaches of Goa. Its a region with such a beauty that you have to immerse yourself to a timeless experience. Peoples who have been in Konkan during or just after monsoon only can describe the feelings. I think all my friends in MH will agree.

Durodhan, Keep in mind that many Marathas are only recently become Marathas in one of the amazing transformations of caste in India..

Maharashtra's Palace on Wheels nearly empty

In my last few weeks in Maharashta, I had a conflict deciding which of the wonderful places to go. I thought it had quite a bit to offer. -------

PUNE, NOVEMBER 28: If there ever was a time to get tourism professionals to steer Maharashtra’s Palace-on-Wheels, it’s now.

Staffed by 50—including beauticians, health instructors, attendants and a chef—the palatial, 21-coach Deccan Odyssey rolled into Pune railway station last evening with just three guests on board.

Confirming the number of tourists for the $ 485-per-day seven nights, eight days package, Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) tour manager Arun Gokhale said: ‘‘A couple from the Netherlands and a US citizen are travelling. They boarded the train at Mumbai last Wednesday.’’

based on statistics as on date (30th november 2005) of the minor destinations – sub forum:

in terms of popularity (viz. Destinations of which people are curious to learn more), Himachal Pradesh leads with 232 posts followed by Kerala (195), Rajasthan (135) and Ladakh & Zanskar (124).

as per statistics, Maharastra comes at 10th with 39 posts and West Bengal at 14th with only 26 posts.

details are as follows:

name of forum - no. of posts - ranking

Andaman & Nicobar Islands - 19 - 17
Andhra Pradesh - 34 - 11
Gujrat - 51 - 8
Himachal Pradesh - 232 - 1
Jammu & Kashmir - 45 - 9
Karnataka - 57 - 7
Kerala - 195 - 2
Ladakh & Zanskar - 124 - 4
Madhya Pradesh & Chhatisgarh - 20 - 16
Maharashtra - 39 - 10
Orissa - 12 - 18
Punjab & Haryana - 28 - 13
Rajasthan - 135 - 3
Sikkim - 34 - 11
Tamil Nadu - 87 - 5
Uttar Pradesh & Uttaranchal - 76 - 6
West Bengal - 26 - 14
Other Areas - 21 - 15

this is not to belittle any state but the fact remains that tourists have got their own preferences. in order to make other destinations more attractive, lot more needs to be done to promote the destinations by the concerned authortiies.

Thanks Sadhuji, good to know.
I understand Gurumayi is coming to roost at Ganeshpuri permanently soon; another spiritual tourist draw. On the pilgrimage route there's also Shirdi, Nasik, Omkareshwar and Ahmednagar (Meherbaba-land), and Igatpuri (HQ for Vipassana). Okay, i'm repeating stuff now.
