Self Drive car to take from Bombay to mahabaleshwar
Hi,
I was wondering that apart from Hertz and similarly priced options, if anyone else has used any any cheaper self drive cars available from Bombay to take to mahabaleshwar/panchgani. I would like to know the experience of handing the car back also as i heard that it generally is a very hassleprone exercise.

How much have you been quoted for a self drive car? With driver, an AC Indica is about INR 1500 per day outstation plus drivers batha of around 100-150, so I wonder if self drive is particularly cheaper ? Very often for outstation trips we hire a pvt car so as to avoid the hassle of driving and wear and tear on our own car on bad road surfaces.Would be interested to know if you get any details. Thanks.

Hi,I rented a self drive car from Avis, last year for 2+ weeks. I booked a Indiaca or similar, but got upgraded to a Baleno. I think I paid Rs 750 with a AmEx plat discount, which was not bad.
Petrol, engine oil, flat tire repairs were all extra.
Now the time comes to return the car in the same condition I rented it, every little stratch, bug splatter, etc was examained, they tried to get more money from me for so called damages, I told to piss off.
I threatened them that I would contact Avis in Canada, or the US, and my credit card co. (Amex).
After speaking with the so called manager, I walked out of there without paying extra.
Some tips:
Rent either from Hertz of Avis
Rent at night, so when you return the car, scratches will be less visable.
Call them up and ask for self drive specials.
Do check the car they are giving you for ALL damages and condtion of the interior.
Make sure the radio works.
Don't be afraid to ask for a upgrade.

this "damages" business sounds bad. Anyways i have in the meanwhile gone ahead and bought a second hand car. Was getting tired of this monotonous work-lifestyle in Mumbai and wanted to go see some hills. Hoping that the monsoon continues so that it is pleasurable.
