Hi folks, has anyone visited Kuda caves or Thanale caves near Nadsur? I read where it's possible to catch a bus from Mangaon that stops near Kuda caves. I was planning to base myself in Mahad, and wondered if buses run between Mahad and Mangaon. Also, I was planning to make my way from Mahad to Karjat via Khopoli. Nadsur is on or close to the road between Mahad and Khopoli. From Khopoli I could catch a suburban train to Karjad, or so I read. But the question is, are there any buses running between Mahad and Khopoli?

Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated.

As far as I know there would not be any direct buses between Mahad and Khopoli.

You would have to go to Pen and catch a bus for Khopoli or go to Pune and catch a bus for Khopoli.

This link gives you information about MSRTC timetable

Mahad and Mangaon, both lie on NH-17!!
So there is plenty of connectivity by Local State Transport buses.
Not to be bothered!!

Thanks for that information, aarosh. Pen is more or less on the way, so it might be worth trying that route. Although, if all else fails I suppose the easiest thing to do would be to head for Pune, as I'll be going to Bedsa and Junnar. Kondane caves shouldn't be difficult to get to from Lonavala.
I tried the website, but it doesn't seem to be working. It doesn't bring up search results, even for popular destinations. Also, the click-on for Volvo bus timetable etc. isn't loading....may be it's a very popular website, too much traffic?

There might be a problem with the spelling of the places that you are checking. You could try the spelling that appears in the drop down when you try a character.

I checked the website and it is working properly. However the time table for Volvo, Mahabus and Semi Luxury is not working.

I have been to see the caves after a hike to Sudhagad. I was not too impressed with them. You can get buses to Nadsur from Pali. There are buses to Pali from Mumbai and Thane and probably from Mahad and Khopoli as well.

Aarosh I used the drop down place names. I'll try again later. May be I'll be more successful next time.

Vic, I don't have an exact itinerary yet for this sector of the trip, as the caves are the reason I'm going there and at this stage I'm just looking for towns that would be good bases for buses, or if necessary close enough to hire a taxi for day trips. So far the stops for seeing the caves are Kohlapur - Karad - Chiplun - Mahad (with side trip to Mangaon to catch bus to Kuda caves. I've been visiting caves (mostly Buddhist) all around India in short trips since 2008.At this stage I'm now looking to visit mostly the minor (simpler) caves.

Praks, were the caves you visited the Kuda caves? Most of the caves in the Konkan are fairly simple and poorly preserved, but there are some unusual features in the design of these late Hinayana monasteries that I'm interested in checking out.

Thanks for the offer Vic, although I think I'm OK now. To see the caves in this region, Konkan, I'll be stopping first in Kohlapur then train to Karad and then bus to Mahad, via Chiplin.
The tricky part is getting from Mahad to Karjat ( for Kondane caves), possibly train or bus from Veer to Roha ....then Kalyan etc. Alternatively, bus from Mahad to Pune then backtracking through Lonavala ( loved it last time, but this time going there to see Bedsa caves).

There are buses from Mahad to Pali. To reach Nadsur you have to pass through Pali. There is no other road. After seeing the caves at Nadsur, you could catch the bus going to Thane via Pali and Khopoli and get off at Chowk Phata on the old Mumbai-Pune highway for a bus/rickshaw to Karjat. Please note that this bus leaves Nadsur at 1700 hrs., so you will need to make a night halt somewhere, either Pali or Khopoli or Karjat. From Karjat, take a bus to Kondivade from where a short trek will take you to Kondana caves. Return to Karjat for a train to Lonavala.
