Pointers to good Hotels in Mahabaleshwar

Hi I am planning to go to Mahabaleshwar on 22 Dec 2007 to 24th Dec 2007. Please advice me on some good hotels in Mahabaleshwar.
Will it be nice to do a prior booking and then go there or on spot booking will be available. How about staying in Pachagani?
Any pointers will be really helpful.

Mahableshwar will be too crowded, like another Mumbai or Bangalore. Panchagani is much better & you can easily go sight seeing to Mahableshwar from here. Here is link to one good resort at Panchagani http://summerplazaresort.com/

Question I want it cheap

Hi,

we're planning a visit to Mahabaleshwar from 20th onwards and realized that our booking efforts have set in a bit late. All the budget places are full.

Does anyone know a cheap place or homestay etc in or around Mahabaleshwar? Since we would be having our own car a radius of 20 to 30km is perfectly fine with us. Our only two requirements are cleanliness and it has got to be cheap.

Besides, what do you think about 'taking a chance'? We went to Lonavla without pre-booking and felt like crying once there since everything was either full, expensive or dirty or both. Would the situation be the same in Mahabaleshwar, especially during Easter?

Thanks a lot!

Go to Panchgani, you will find decent accomodation at cheaper rates.

To help future travellers, let me just quickly post an update about our recent trip to Mahabaleshwar. We did NOT stay in Mahabaleshwar but opted for Panchgani instead. Very good decision, not only because the rates are much cheaper but also because it is quieter.
I'd recommend Hotel Mount View (along the Main Road, 2km into Panchgani while coming from Wai), which has very basic, old fashioned but clean rooms for Rs.1000 (or Rs. 1200 with breakfast). No frills, but very comfy. The view is stunning. You look down on Krishna River and that's just the kind of view you'd want to wake up to.

We also spend a night at Gitanjali Hotel which is again off the Main Road near Bank of Maharashtra, but it's got no view to speak of and the receptionist is an old grumpy fellow who'd much rather you get lost. It's again 1k per night. Food's no good, though, and the rooms are very very basic once again.
However, considering that Mumbai's travel-crazy weekenders have pushed up hotel prices in the area to incredible levels, i suppose we got a really good deal.

Thanks for that update. I have been to Panchgani 3 - 4 times (My last trip was before 10 - 12 years) & never stayed at Mahableshwar. We used to do only short day trips to Mahableshwar for boating.

I have many fond memories of Panchgani like eating hand made ice cream, going on long horse rides, playing table tennis at the club, riding bicycle on table land etc.,

Thanks for the info. We have been wanting to go there for sometime now. Is it warm yet? Also is it still forested or are all the surrounding hills denuded like unfortunately, in so many other places in Maharashtra.

one can try the hotel temple view in old mahabaleshwar as a relatively cheap alternative.
