Metheran Hill Station
Hello All,
In Jan. I will be making my first trip to India. I will be in Mumbai for a few days and then heading to the Metheran Hill Station for a few days. Any tips on Metheran??? I haven't seen many postings on this area except the basics: No cars, lots of monkeys and strawberrys. I am very excited about this trip and am happy for any feedback. |

To get to/from Matheran you first need to get to Neral Junction.
There are only 2 'express' trains that stop at Neral Jn. T 1007…Mumbai CST…07:15, Neral Jn…08:43, Pune…11:15 T 1029…Mumbai CST…09:00, Neral Jn…10:31, Pune…13:05 Mumbai - Neral fare: - Air con Chair class = Rs 167 Bookable 2nd class seat (not air-con) = Rs 50 Good old Indian Railways has decided that the same trains will not stop at Neral on the way back to Mumbai, so there is only one 'Express' train between the two. T 1024…Pune…07:00, Neral Jn…10:10, Mumbai CST…12:20 Neral - Mumbai fare: - 2 tier air con = Rs 387 3 tier air con = Rs 213 Sleeper class (non air con) = Rs 121 At all other times take a ‘frequent’ local train to/from Karjat 13 km south or Kalyan Jn. 33 km north. From both of these stations there are ‘loads’ of Express trains to either Mumbai CST or Pune, (+ many other places) Below are a list of local trains that run between Mumbai CST (VT) and Neral Jn. it is only a selection and not the complete list, I compiled this list about 2 years ago, times may have changed slightly. Mumbai CST departures and (Neral Jn. arrivals) ....05:30 (07:40), ....07:30 (09:20), ....08:24 (10:13), ....10:52 (12:42), ....11:25 (13:15), ....11:55 (14:06), ....12:42 (14:42), ....13:40 (15:29), ....14:40 (16:30) Neral Jn departures and (Mumbai CST arrivals) ....07:41 (09:32), ....08:13 (10:17), ....08:47 (11:00), ....14:59 (17:11), ....15:44 (17:39), ....16:40 (18:32), ....17:29 (19:24), ....18:38 (20:34), ....18:54 (20:48), ....20:00 (21:51), ....21:04 (22:58) Neral Jn - Matheran T 603…Neral Jn…09:00, Matheran…11:05 T 605…Neral Jn…10:45, Matheran…12:45 T 607…Neral Jn…12:10, Matheran…14:15 T 609…Neral Jn…17:00, Matheran…19:00 T 602…Matheran…05:45, Neral Jn…07:25 T 606…Matheran…13:00, Neral Jn…14:50 T 608…Matheran…14:35, Neral Jn…16:20 T 610…Matheran…16:10, Neral Jn…18:10 607 & 608 run on Saturdays & Sundays only, from end of monsoon till 15th June. 602, 603, 605, 606, 609 & 610 run from end of monsoon till 31st March. One extra train runs in both directions from 1st April till 15th June. T 601…Neral Jn…07:30, Matheran…09:30 T 604…Matheran…09:50, Neral Jn…11:55 WARNING… From 16th June till start of monsoon (sometime in July) only 1 train will run in each direction. T 603…Neral Jn…09:00, Matheran…11:05 T 606…Matheran…13:00, Neral Jn…14:50 During the monsoon there are NO trains between Neral Jn and Matheran, the monsoon normally ends late August or early September. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Last edited by steven_ber : Mar 29th, 2005 at 23:02. |

Was in matheran last month !
To get to matehran from Mumbai ..u have 2 options . U can either drive down to matheran or take a train . Matheran is a "no-vehicle" zone . There are no motorised vehicles allowed in matheran . So as a result , u have loads of horses to cart you arnd the place if u wish . The cars have to be parked at "Dasturi point" which is about 30 mins walk from matheran . The drive from mumbai - dasturi point would eb roughly around 2 hrs or less ...depending upon the traffic conditions. The second option being the train. Mumbai has one of the most efficient local railway system in the world ....although its crowded as hell ! All trains going to Karjat on teh Central Railway stop at Neral . There is a train to Karjat roughly every 30 mins . From Neral , U can either take the toy train upto matheran or take one of the many tourist cabs which will drop you off at dasturi point . A suggestion ...avoid the local trains if u cant handle the crowd or if u have too much luggage . The timings of the toy train are synchronised with that of teh arriving local trains . I think u have 2 in the morning and 2 in the evening . Apart from this , its a very nice and peaceful place .Can be crowded (read : is definately crowded ) during the weekends ...as it is the closest hillstation to the people living in Mumbai. |
