Hi,
Till date no efforts have been taken to repair the extensively damaged rail route. It must be sitting somewhere in the dust covered file store room of some non-descriptive railway office, awaiting.... ![]()

I was in Matheran just two days ago and it looks like it will be quite a while before the Neral-Matheran train service resumes. The damage to the tracks due to landslides has been extensive and will take quite a long time to repair, maybe another year or so, although I was told that the service is expected to resume in April 2007.

It's taking much longer then it should take. With new technology you can lay new treks in this much time (It's been alomost 1.1/2 year since the floods) but it seems the authorities are not serious. Even the hotel assocation of matheran are not following up with authorities.
Around one month back there was an article which said that train service should start by Feb 07. Let's hope they start the same before the Summer season starts. Ronak.

I'm sure I saw a post saying the train had started again, do a search for 'Neral' see if that finds it.

I didn't think there were any bookable classes on those trains, but no time to look into it at the moment.

Here is the message I got from Lords Central Hotel in Matheran:
Repairs to the 32 kilometer track section on the Neral Matheran line has almost been completed.Currently safety trials are being conducted. We expect the regular services to start by end March or early April. But nothing definite. So it does not look good for next month or so, considering Indian beaurocracy, So sorry |
