Hi,

I am planning to visit Matheran in feb. We are 6 people. We will start from kalyan jn and reach Neral by early in the morning (with sub arban railway). We want to take toy train from Neral to matheran.

I have a few questions regarding toy train...

Should I book the toy train in advance?
Has any body been to Matheran recently and can confirm if the toy train in functional?

The toy train has 2 classes of seats: FC and 2S. And fare differences are quite high 210 (FC) vs 35 (2S). Can someone advise me whether we should book FC or 2S.? is FC really worth the money? It would be really nice if someone can attach pictures of the both classes of seats..

Thanks.......

It might be worth booking if you're going on a weekend. It's quiet enough on a non-holiday weekday that you won't need to bother in that case. I haven't been on it for a while, but I assume it's currently functional.

FC probably isn't worth the money to be honest. What it gets you is more padded seats, and a more private compartment. That might be nice for your small group. 2S would be an open carriage, but it's comfortable enough - it's not as if you're travelling overnight!

The train was running in December, I saw it! No idea about bookings though, have you tried the indrail website? If you go during weekday in a non vacation period, there should not be any necessity for advance booking as the locals prefer using the ST mini bus which is very much faster.

Tickets can be booked at any reservation centres. No need of FC tickets, coz it's more or less the same, and it takes only 2hours to reach matheran. Opt for 2S. There are second class tickets available and would be more feasible if you have plan to travel week days when rush is less. During peak season, holidays, week ends, better Book reservations in advance.

If you are visiting on weekdays then Reservation is not required, but weekend is different case.

Toy train has 3 2S coaches and 1 FC coach. non reservation people are allowed to enter in 2S coach but to avoid a long Queue for getting ticket from Naral-Matheran I would advice you to do a prior booking.... Believe me you will enjoy Toy Train ride a lot.

Train is functioning and I guess they have 3 Journey in the morning and 2 in the evening.

Regards
Rushi

Hi, i am going to Matheran early Feb. i have booked the matheran toy train tickets through irctc website just today. We have experienced in the past that after the central railway train stops at Neral, there is a huge crowd running towards the ticket counter causing chaos for the tickets. If the seats are full then one needs to wait till the next train. If you are with family with little children then worst; as there is nothing around to kill time at Neral. It is not desirable that the journey begins with a sad note.

Hence i had decided that the next time we visit matheran we shall have an advance ticket booked.

Please provide dates on which you would like to book.

It may possible that list is showing two trains which are only running on weekends and you might be trying to book in same.

In the IRCTC website you can search for trains from Neral (NRL) to Matheran (MAE). Further select Second Sitting (2S)or first class (FC). Even i made an error intially as i searched for SL but got the options when i searched for first class.

You have all the trains listed for departures at 7.30, 8.50, 10.15 and 17.05. Similar for matheran to neral. I am sure you can book too.

I've just been to Matheran on the toy train, on the 19th of January. See thread "One day in Matheran", for our experiences.

We were able to book the train through a Goa travel agent before we got there and I think that it was worth it, even if you are travelling mid-week. There was a large party travelling at the same time as us (mid-week) and SC was packed. We had FC tickets, which meant that we had a carrage to ourselves. This allowed us to swap from one side to another, to take advantage of the magnificent views. As someone of fairly ample proportions (I'm 5'8" and 90kg) I felt as well that it would have been a bit cramped in second class. It would have been cramped in first class as well if the carriage had been full!

One thing to bear in mind, especially if you are going to Matheran as part of a longer trip, is that there are notices at the station giving restrictions to the amount of baggage that you can carry (I think it was 5kg in SC, 7.5kg in FC). They didn't enforce this on our trip, but you never know when it might be an issue.

That is General Nature of Monkeys!!
Always Hide eatables in Monkey occupied area!!

It happened same to us with parle-G Biscuits!
Probably the monkeys wanted to become "GENIUS"
