There are many good trails in SAHYADRI. Depends what you are expecting to see and how many days you can spare.

I personaly recommend:

RATANGAD-KUMSHET-HARISHCHANDER GAD-KOTHRA route. You can reach RATANGAD by road and again find jeep from KOTHRA to hit highway.

If you want to have an adventure of a lifetime.....you try to go from Mumbai to Goa.... by hitchhiking and stopping over different places....and dont ever leave the coast...

You will have to cross numerous creeks... some have passenger ferry service and for some you have to take help of the locals....

I did it in 2001 December and came out victorious.... Though after Tarkarli i headed straight to Amboli and not to Goa

Mumbai to Goa...a coastal ride

Yes- you are ansolutely correct...this could be named as a ride of life time as people used to rate MANALI-LEH route.

But I have little questions before I put this route in my list [Some people from PUNE have done this ] - DO YOU THINK NON-MARATHI SPEAKING PEOPLE CAN GO THROUGH REMOTE REGIONS ?

If possible- do let us know the route also.

Well... I am not a Marathi speaking person and I did it without any hitch..... though it might just help if one knows a few marathi words...and phrases.... moreover i was a hindi speaker... and reading sign in marathi and then guessing the meaning is easy... i dont know how it would work for a foreigner...

But anyway its worth the experiment

The route i took was

Bombay
Mandwe (by ferry)
Alibaug
Kihim
Harihareshwar
Harnai
Dabhol
Guhagar
Hedvi and Velneshwar
Jaigad
Malgund
Ganpatipule
Ratnagiri
Pawas
Jaitapur
Vijaydurg
Devgad
Malvan
Tarkarli
Sawantwadi
Amboli

I may have skipped a few places here and there but this is the rough route i followed

the idea is not leaving the coastal towns.... and if you do that then you start stumbling upon hidden jewels

Like in Guhagar... i had the option of going to Chiplun and then going to Ganpatipule....had i done that.... i wouldnt have discovered this beautiful place called Malgund....Keshavsut birthplace....similarily i skipped the normal route in Ratnagiri and stumble upon Pawas and then had a adventure of a life time in Jaitapur

and along the entire stetch try to travel the way locals travel by MSRTC

and like wise

I did the entire stetch in 14 days with a budget of less than 150 per day in 2001 .... i will bet you will complete it in 3000 today also

Try to see Panhelkaji caves, suvarnadurg, anjarle, dapoli, gopalgad, purnagad, kunkeshwar along the trail.......these are the places which i saw ..... and remember its not an exhaustive list.....you can keep on stumbling a lot many more....

Like after coming back i realized that i have left a few very good forts along the trail

I am damn confident about this trail...its easy and people are the most friendly people.....do it before the development spoils them ....

I plan to re do it in next three four years with my wife and kid....

AND PLEASE DO TRY TO SPEND A NIGHT IN THE REST HOUSE OF JAIGAD FORT.....ONE OF THE MOST WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE ONE CAN HAVE

You could include Aurangabad, Ajanta and Ellora in your plans.

Trimbak and hariher are nice places to spend a day or two. I rememebr climbing BRAHAMGIRI in rains...wind up there was something to remember. I shot some images of this trip. This is perhaps only one of its own type of mountains-where you can have fun in rains also.

Lot to see and feel in this range !!
