Thumbs up Lonar

Well, I would suggest..

1. Spend one day each for AJANTA and ELLORA
2. Do take a guide when you enter-witout him/her it is very tiring and not worth that effort of watching every sq. inch with that much concentration and recalling history.

3. LONAR is worth and a must- I spent a night -pitched tent near a temple and it was a wonderfull experience living so close to it...in jungle.

4. This is wonderfullplace- but do spare time to see a temple which is actually now a private property but you can visit. This is known as MARUTI TEMPLE....this is magnetic rock infact which has been painted SAFFRON and had been named as temple. This could be a rock from another space due to it's character and scientific finding. You can find relevant dats of research at NASA website..and on another websites if you want to fo deep in subject.

DO NOT FORGET TO WALK FULL CIRCLE OF THIS LAKE- you will be amazed what you will see. TEMPLE RUINS with world class craftmanship are broken and lying under the SUN..in open. This work is by muslim invadors and later on we INDIANS looted it to sell in market.

BUT DO WALK FULL CIRCLE-there is well established trail.

If you are interested in caves- there is one cave which is of BC era- PEEPALKHORA or PEEPALKHERA something like this...you need ot have high clearance vehicle..all rough..village road..rocks !

But I managed to drive OMINI upto the board and then there are cemented steps going down....it is wonderfull place..wish you could go but needs time.

I have read about this on net but as kailash is visiting AJANTA ELLORA- so he wanted to know about LONAR.

I personaly like this region- never mentiond hills which have centuries old templs and buildings..being maintained by then worriers and fighters...changes hands and civilizations. MUSLIMS-HINDU-MUSLIMS-BRITISH and what fantastic thing BRITISH have done is bombarding them. Now much of these places are in ruins...and our Govt. as usualy DAMN CARE !

But you need infrastructure to visit these places. You have to have someone ...a experienced trekker who should be MARATHI.

vehicle support along with food and bottles water in abundance.

There are many GADS in AURANGABAD distt.

KAILASH ! one more think which I forget to mention perhpas...do not miss DAULATABAD FORT. When I was there...beside a strong critic of politics of our country...I FELT PROUD TO BE A INDIAN.

This is fantastic creation...and what a creation...could never won by even AKBAR THE GREAT ! by force...but as usual...BETRYAL did play role. But no one could win this place by muscle !!

Can somebody give me details of this new find in Kutch....
I have been to Lonar.... and yeah its wonderful..... i slept in the temple.... it is easy to persuade the Poojari to let you sleep there....

But my suggestion is that dont make a visit to Lonar at a break neck speed try to spend at least 24 hours over there... the ruins, jungle and the periphery of the lake are good places to explore

prana ! you are correct. LONAR need full one day. I personaly liked this place, people and villages.

Information about LONAR is also available on NASA website.

As for Gujrat crator is concerned- I did some googling and found this :

Impact Crater in Rann of Kutch
Thursday, October 26, 2006 | AY

Indian geologists claim to have discovered a possible Impact Crater in Kutch district of Gujarat. The crater, suspected to have been formed by the impact of an extra-terrestrial object, is seen as a circular feature near Luna village in the northwestern Banni Plains of the Great Rann in Kutch district. The site - the third in the country after Lonar in Maharashtra and Ramgarh in Rajasthan - is located about a kilometre away from a human settlement belonging to the Harappan period and may have found reference in ancient Sanskrit texts, which mention the "impact of a burning extraterrestrial object" in western India some 4,000-5,000 years ago. The geologists of the space applications centre, surveyed the crater and found a dense growth of a variety of acacia plant species in the inner part of the rim. The circular crater measures 1.2 km east-west and 1.2 km north-south and forms a shallow depression filled with sediments and the lowest point of which is hardly two meters above the mean sea level.

Aurangzeb's grave is within striking distance of Daulatabad too, kailash, if it takes your fancy.

Do you mean crowded in April, or in general? I was there in February & it was pretty quiet aside from a funeral.

Oh well. Muslim festivals tend to move back a few weeks each year so the dates do alter slightly but I'm sure you'll have lots to keep you occupied. Enjoy!

Kailash....

Why do you want to avoid the crowd.... frankly the essence of travelling in India is mixing with people...if you dont do it... you barely scratch the surface of India...

Khuldabad is a nice place... not very crowded except on fridays...see the watermill out there... its wonderful human ingenuity...

As you are in that region... i will advice you to visit two more places....

NANDED Gurudwara.....its a beautiful place... stay over there and wake up in the morning and attend the Shabad Keertan...it ethereal

Two try to visit Parli Baijnath and Oundha Nagnath... the famed Jyotirlinga... the settings of both of them are marvellous

These three place will take three days of yours....

Aurangabad or Nanded are good bases for them

Regards

Parana is right and I also do agree that do not avoid people [although this is personal prefference ] but as I had not been to NANDER GURUDWARA- so can not say anything about it.

My experience with DAULTABAD was good one except MAHARASHTRA GOVT [ Or ASI ] cold not arrange water for school kids. Small kids are filled up in buses and almost everyday- thousands of kids are visiting this fort which takes good 2-4 hrs minimum.

In heat and commotion at some places ...they are pushed and sometimes ran-over. But there is no water outlet for them. I saw one women SELLING WATER-right on inner enterance and small kids were forced to pay for that.

It was a typical POOR SHOW of ASI and same I felt when I visited HARISHCHANDER GAD last month.

Strange that MAHARASTRA being very sensitive to culture and values- these concerns are supressed..and not being voiced properly.
