Its still raining in Satara as per my update. So you can catch up with the wonderful weather.
About the Hotels I would recommend Maharaja due to its location and also it being a decent place. Hem executive also has the same location. You can check that too. |

Well, I had already phoned and made a tentative booking at Hotel Radhika. The man at the other end of the phone was very courteous and helpful. Ive located it on Google Earth too, and it seems to be in a quiet location, next to a few other hotels. Anyway, once we get there we will see the room and if it is not satisfactory we can check out the hotels suggested by you New Traveller. Thanks.
The Radhika person also said it was raining, that was on Monday. I will post my report after I return.

Radhika is one of the earlier hotels in the city and serves some good gujrathi Thali. you can try that if you get an opportunity and if it is of your interest.
Been a long time since I went there though . . . |

In Mumbai, you only get Marathi style thali at small places in Parel these days, more of Malvani style really. I always enjoy typical local Marathi fare whenever I go to the interior. So tasty, thikat and ambat !!! |

Great information on this thread guys.
I am based in Mumbai and was planning to bike down with my friend, however my friend has developed cold feet and insists he can't sit pillion for 6+ hours. So our next option is to catch an overnight train/ST to Satara. I plan on spending the whole day photographing/just walking around and returning back after sunset. I read in an earlier post that finding an autorickshaw there is difficult (if not impossible) and ST timings are erratic. Hiring a two wheeler from Satara looks like the perfect thing to do. Right now, I have two questions ![]() 1) Do we get two wheelers on hire/ any leads and contacts would be appreciated. 2) What are the timings of the ST from Satara to Kaas/Bamnoli? Frequency? I plan to leave tomorrow night or early Saturday morning so if someone could help me before that, it would be great.

Is it raining heavily in Satara this week? Saw a news article in the paper about heavy rains causing damage

Yup. heavy rains throughout the region. Northern Karnataka has seen the worst of this onslaught.
What effect will these rains have on the Kaas flowers? From what I gathered, the flowers will all disappear by the end of October - will more rains help them stay on longer? |

You can contact this number 02162-234567/230064 (Satara Bus Depot). http://msrtconline.in/timetable.aspx this is Maharastra ST site. However, it does not show the timing for Bamnoli route.

I think I am a bit too late to reply to niknik. But I guess will help others who are in a simmilar situation.
Bike rentals are not available in Satara and the frequency of Buses on the Bamnoli route is scarce. Auto ricks will not usually take a one way route but I think this can be worked out with some autorickshawala and hire him for a few hours at a fixed rate. Since this is not a usual method be aware of the rates that they quote as meter would not be applicable. |

Thanks for the information new-traveller, I didn't go this weekend.
Can you clarify what you mean by "scarce"? One bus in the morning one in the evening? One bus every 2 hours? How much can I expect to pay the auto-rickshaw guy for a round trip? |

I do not have the exact time table with me- but its pretty much like one in the morning and one returning in the evening type. there might have been some modifications though but i dont think there is a bus every 2 hours. Try to ST stand number provided by Sushant. In the meantime I will try to get in touch with some friend and see if they have any details available.
I am clueless on what to quote for a rick as I never had to hire this. But this is definetly a workable option. How many of you are going? is a 3 seater rick enough? On a generic thought I suggest fuel cost + a fixed amount for the entire day (say 200/300 bucks) should be a a very good deal for an honest auto driver. Let me know if you really want some help on this option. |

Wow .. lucky to get a pointer to this IM-thread (from snonymous? or genesis?) just-in-time!
I am hoping to be in Mahabaleshwar next 4 days (assuming the heavy rains eases off a bit and we can drive down NH4 safely ) and so will try and visit this place one day. Wife liked the wildflower pictures so we are bound to go! PS: It was genesis (not snonymous!)who led me to this thread. But after reading this thread, it is snonymous who has infected me with a wild-enthusiasm, to somehow see the Kaas wildflowers. Some of the links here point to awesome rain-drenched terrain and waterfalls, besides carpets of wildflowers! Hope I can see them all ... and shoot them!! . .
