I had a neighbor who arrived from Argentina 22 years ago and he doesn't speak English. One day in a panic due to an earthquake he drove his car through my garage door. He had been warned by his son in English that it was closed but being stubborn... Then I told him he was going to pay for it. He had trouble understanding it. I piled fresh cow manure, some 2 tons, on the edge of my property near his kitchen window. Two days later he agreed to pay. Doesn't mean that he couldn't get by living in a different linguistic area and refusing to cooperate. Just means there is an easier way to do things and get along..

I'm not saying people shouldn't learn Marathi, or that it's a good thing that my hosts haven't bothered to learn any. But if you can live 60 years in a place and get by perfectly fine in Hindi (including buying land, building a house, running a business, etc), I would assume that someone coming to do an internship for a few months probably doesn't need to study Marathi in order to get by.

A few words is not an extensive course of study and I have no doubt that it will improve the quality of experience. Given the short length of stay specifically to that area, word for word, better than Hind (and I did study Hindi as well)..

Hey everyone, Rinde and I are in Pune for almost 2 weeks now. We're doing fine, we could get by with basic English most of the time. The only trouble that we have is dealing with auto drivers. They often refuse to charge by the meter. Or sometimes, they ask for Rs.5 to 10 on top of the meter. And most of them don't seem to understand English.

I forgot to ask. I'm currently roaming on my mobile with IDEA, and I would like to use GPRS. While my Singapore Operator states that I can use GPRS with my original Singapore settings, but I have not been able to connect so far.

I would also like to send smses to Indian number, is there any special instructions? I have tried sending to an Indian number, but the recipient didn't receive it.

Glad to hear all is going well! Re the phone - so you're using an IDEA sim? Its possible that IDEA has a proxy server set up for use with GPRS (don't know this specifically - but in the case of airtel all GPRS connection go through an airtel proxy server - so to browse the internet you need to enter the address of the proxy server into the browser options - usually under something like "options" and "server setting" or "advanced setting" - depending on the browser you have).

re the texting to indian numbers - that's strange. If you have an IDEA sim then you shouldn't have any problems - unless they require some sort of prefix (on airtel you just sms the number direct - no area code, no 0, no nothing).

good luck.

Yup, calling and sms works now. Thanks a lot!
Re the GPRS, I somehow got to connect to Vodafone and BPL networks, and they work fine. So I guess there's some configuration issues with IDEA.

I'm currently using StarHub from Singapore, was roaming with IDEA network, but I switched to Vodafone instead, cos of its GPRS.
