Hike to Matheran

Hello!
Any idea how to go hiking to Matheran? I have earlier walked the road to the top but want to avoid that. Which are the points and where to start if one goes from Neral or Bhivpuri Road and if it is okay to go in rains?

Matheran

There are several routes, besides the road, to go up to Matheran, some being more difficult than the others. The easiest one is called the Postman's route which starts from Neral and ends at Dasturi, intersecting the road as well as the railway line a couple of times. Another easy but longer route is from Borgaon, on the Chowk Karjat Road, to either Rambagh point or One Tree Hill point. At Bhivpuri, from just outside the station, there is a route to Garbut point. All these routes are possible during the monsoon. Among the more difficult routes are the one via Peb fort and ones via Prabal and Irshalgad forts respectively, besides others.

Thanks Praks, Will try One Tree Hill or Garbut Point to start with. Thanks for all the information on different routes.

via Peb fort
O boy! That is one hellish route. We did it in rains and, to say the least, it was scary. There are a couple of iron ladders and reaching to their first rung on those slippery slopes and then climbing down is not at all funny. Matheran is fun..if tried in some other way than the usual ones, otherwise it's just too crowded and not enjoyable.

That base village of Peb Fort is Ambewadi..ummm IIRC.

I have trekked from one tree hill in Matheran to Chowk in April 1973. It is a steep down hill and in some places, I had to take recourse to sliding as the down gradient was very steep. In rainy season, the path will be slippery.

Hello, thanks a lot for your views.
Will surely try Peb Fort route after rains & go via one of the simpler route now.
