Ellora daytrip from mumbai?

hi,

is it possible to do a daytrip from mumbai to ellora?

or is it better to go in the morning from mumbai, stay one night in ellora and the next day back?

whats the best way to go, bus or train?

No; too much, and too far. (It may just about be possible; that wouldn't make it desirable.)

Yes, or stay in Aurangabad. Leaving early from Mumbai and staying in Ellora itself (there are guesthouses and hotels), this would give you the advantage of having around (a good part of) two days to explore Ellora, which wouldn't go amiss. You'd have to pay the entrance fee twice; little steep for foreigners, not so for Indians. Worth it either way though.

There are both good train and bus connections to Aurangabad at least. I'd be surprised if there were no direct buses Mumbai-Ellora.

You can also try overnight train from Mumbai to Aurangabad.
