Hi Neerajd, thinks for your blog post. It was interesting reading. As I see your trip through coastal road was in 2011. I hope the road (Sagari mahamarg) has become better and wider in these 15 days.

I am planning a 3 / 4 days trip to Konkan. The outline plan is

Day I - Mumbai - Murud Harnai - By SH 4 (Coastal Highway) or NH 17 (Still contemplating)
Day II Harnai Murud to Ganpati Pule
Day three - Ganpati Pue to Mumbai via NH17 or Ganpati Pule - Harihareshwer by SH 4
Day 4 (if SH 4 is taken) Harihareshwar to Mumbai

Is it doable (I have done NH 17 and I know it is doable by NH 17) if we take SH 4 either one way or both ways.

I would request Neerajd and / other IMrs who have done this route recently to kindly give advice.

Hi harshad,

I did the Ganapatipule to Velneshwar stretch by SH4 (coastal route) in August on a scooty (its in the TR). It's very scenic and I'd recommend it to you. Taking car on the ferry is not a problem and some very expensive cars (BMW) and heavy vehicles (bus) use the ferries. The road quality is good but there will be very bad patches also where the tarmac is broken and instead you have uneven pointy stones. It's OK for the car still. The road is two lane only but not unmanageable. Don't drive at night.

I'd recommend 4 days for the trip till Ganapatipule and return. If you've not decided on a stop, then try for Guhagar, it's the least spoilt beach.

Thanks Vaibhav, very encouraging reply. The tentative plan is as follows-
03 March - Mumbai - Harnai Murud - Stay there NH 17 and SH combo
04 March - Harnai Murud - Ganpati Pule - Stay there
05 March Ganpati Pule - Harihareshwar - Stay there - Use MSH 4 (Coastal highway) all through
06 March Harihareshwer - Mumbai via MSH 4 and regular route

How does it sound. Stopping at Harihareshwer for its beauty and also to have spare time in hand to cater for bad road conditions if any.

It seems fine but given that the best beach stretch is south of Murud (Janzira) and till Vengurla (north of Goa), I would've planned the first night stay at Harihareshwar. If needed, the last night would have been at Murud if proceeding back by coastal route. Alternatively, the last night could be as far south as Guhagar because the beach there is nicer than other places. In such a case the last day's drive would be 300 kms but you can do it using the internal road (non coastal). Ganapatipule per se has some cultural significance (Prachin konkan museum, main temple, etc) so you need a half day to see the main sights there.

Niwara resort at Shrivardhan gets good reviews. Here's an old report - Trip report - Shrivardhan, Diveagar, Harihareshwar (Konkan coast) in Dec 2011.

Thanks for prompt input. The trip is primarily to Ganpati Pule (being maharashtrian Ganpati Pule is vital) and that reduces my freedom and flexibility. Also Durga Devi at Murud Harnai is our family deity so we have to visit. Hence the onward trip would be rapid through NH 17 and various SH.

Also, Murud Harnai, Ganapati Pule as well as Harihareshwar are all south of Murud Janjira. May be Srivardhan also would be a good place.

Thanks shrikant. Another of my constraint is bookings already done at harnai Murud on 3rd and ganapati Pule on 4th. However stay at Diveagar is looking to be a good option on return leg. Any recommendation for accommodation at Diveagar?

I would suggest staying overnight in Guhagar on the 3rd night. You can take the ferry route or the road route via bhatgaon bridge to Guhagar. You will reach Hedvi first, then Velneshwar. Have lunch at Hotel Annapoorna. Evening spend time at the beach. Or before going to the beach go to Gopalgad.

On the way back to Mumbai see the Parashuram temple on top of the ghat and then halt for tea at the Vashisti river view point. After you cross Mahad you can also halt at Gandar Pale caves right on NH 17.
