Hi there, IMers.

This question is a bit off the beaten track, well not exactly because I imagine the Konkan is a popular weekend getaway for our Mumbaikers.

I'm planning this November to visit the Buddhist caves at Karad, Mahad-Pale, Kol and possibly also at Chiplun, Dapoli and Kud. I also want to visit Kohlapur museum to see the excavated finds from Brahmapura.

So far my trip itinerary is Trivandrum-Varkala-Cancona-Ratnagir-bus to Kolhapur- Karad, but then the train line runs out.

Does anyone know if there are regular buses between Karad and Chiplun and Mahad? I found out I can catch a morning bus from Kolhapur direct to Mahad. But to save backtracking and allow more time seeing the caves at karad, I was hoping to catch a bus from Karad to Mahad, via Chiplun.

Has anybody caught these buses or know if they run?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I just checked on http://www.msrtconline.in/timetable.aspx
I found a bus leaving from Kolhapur to Roha. Although, route does not mention Karad as a stop, I am quite sure that the bus should be taking a halt at Karad, being a major city. Same with Mahad.. But just confirm it once you are here or in advance with someone else. Additionaly, there are only 2 buses in a day.

Kolhapur - Roha 07:30 Umbraj, Satara, Pachwad, Wai, Pachgani, Mahabaleshwar, Poladpur Ordinary 180

Also, you mentioned you can get down at Chiplun and get another bus for Mahad.
Karad-Chiplun frequency is around 30-45 min while Chiplun-Mahad has good frequency almost every 15 min.

Thanks so much Patil, this is exactly the information I was after. I looked on the mstdc site, but only for direct buses as I was unfamiliar with halts en route. The first bus you mentioned, from Kohlapur to Roha seems to be heading north of Karad (ie. to Wai) before descending Varandha Ghat. Is that correct or have I missed a ghat somewhere? I was looking for buses heading down Kumbharl Ghat, so as to see more of the Konkan. But karad was not showing up as a depot on the timetables, only Satara, and I thought it might be a problem if buses bypassed the bus station at Karad.

As you mentioned though, Karad is a major town. So I'm grateful to be informed that buses are fairly frequent on that route. Once again, thanks.

I suggest you also visit Panhalekaji or Panhaledurg caves in Dapoli division of Ratnagiri district. There are direct buses to Dapoli from Kolhapur run by Maharashtra state transport. i.e. MSRTC. You can catch these buses from Karad and Chiplun as well as these buses follow Kolhapur- Karad- Chiplun route. In chiplun route from Ratnagiri also joins so more buses for Dapoli from there. Since you are a historian (read your post on Ter), a small museum in Ratnagiri placed in Thibaw palace has things found in the district. Also an ancient temple from Shilahar period is near Sangameshwar in Ratnagiri district. I also know of one man in the town of Dabhol in Dapoli district who has his private collection from Konkan. I also know of one history professor in Mumbai who has done a lot of study on history of Konkan region. If you are interested I can find their contacts for you. Do let us know if you have finalised your trip for Konkan.

Thanks for your post Sachin. Funny, only last weekend I was looking into Panhelakaji, and Buddhist caves around Chiplun, Khed, Kol and Kuda. So yes, your post comes at just the right time. I'm not near finalising my itinerary, 'cause as always the problem is time and there are just so many caves between Konkan and Kutch! For example, I read about the ones recently found between Pali and Khopoli. So my Konkan trip might end up only lasting a few days, but I would be interested in discussing the caves with an expert. I'm interested in finding out about what the western satraps were up to in the coastal areas....I suspect their history has been overshadowed by greater interest in the Satavahanas.
