2 wheelers in Tansa WLS
Yes you are. If you take the route from NH3 via Atgaon under the railway bridge, after some time you will have to pay the entrance fee to enter the WLS, its valid for exiting as well. There is no restriction as to 2 or 4 wheeler. Right now is a good time for spotting wildlife and birds if you start early enough and the weather is still pleasant. Look out for the delicate dendrobium ovatum and barbatulum wild orchids on the tree trunks/branches, which are currently in full bloom. The public is not allowed to visit the dam site anymore but you can access the lake by cutting through the forest quite easily [on foot] wherever you can see the lake from the road. Pack your food / water etc as nothing is available after Atgaon. You need not return the same way. If you prefer you can take the pipeline road which exits on the Ambadi Wada road. This is quite a circuitous route unless you particularly want to head that way.

Hi snonymous,
Do you have any idea which types of animals and birds are available during the month of November. I wanted to take some natural photographs of animals and birds. Also suggest me the time I should reach there. Thanks, Rishi |

If you can get hold of this paperback, do so, it is quite informative about Tansa WLS and several other nature areas in and around Mumbai. Price approx. Rs 300, I think. Ideal time is early morning and evening. Im not sure about which specific types will be around in Nov. Whenever we've been, there were plenty of racket tailed drongoes, crested serpent eagles, woodpeckers and the usual shrikes, orioles, bayas, bulbuls, egrets, lapwings etc. I once saw a paradise flycatcher, and a very large green chamaeleon. There are sure to be leopards but chances of spotting them may not be that good. Right now there will be plenty of butterflies - best time 9am to 1pm. For some reason, they seem to disappear at around 1, perhaps they go home for lunch? Cant blame them as it gets quite hot after 12noon ! SGNP is also a good place to go for photography, and a lot closer than Tansa, for people from Bombay. |
