Hi There,
I would not suggest Bhandardara in May if you compare the beauty of the place in mansoon months. But if u take it as a new place to visit which is located on high hills and a dam with water near by then you can visit Bhandardara. The highest peak in Maharashtra i.e. Kalsubai is very near by so the weather shall be better than the plains. |

Bhandardara not recommended in May.
Regarding Matheran, during afternoons it gets lot hotter, so if you are looking forward to spend afternoons staying indoor & venturing out early mornings a evenings then Matheran is a good option. Although it will less greener during this days. Another option is Panchgani, it's very close from Pune. It will be lot cooler but you will come across lots of family enjoying their holidays. Ronak.

Bhandardhara in May is very hot in the afternoons because even though it is at an altitude with a large water body, it is very badly deforested for the most part. During the monsoons it is lovely especially when water is released from the dam. Right now, mornings upto about 1000hrs and evenings after 1700hrs will be pleasant.
Matheran is undoubtedly evergreen and very nice in the shade even now in summer. Water bodies? Lake Charlotte is a small water body which will be quite a bit depleted by now. Matheran will be full of tourists right now but if you choose less frequented forest trails such as the Garbut Point trail or Berry Mountain and Panorama Pt [in the evening], rather than the more popular Chowk Pt, Sunset Pt areas, you will still find yourself alone in the forest for the most part. Look out for the giant squirrels, easily visible in this season. And you will not be able to avoid the monkeys !!! As Sharonakm says, perhaps Panchgani may be better being higher up, Ive not been there but look forward to going during the monsoon. |

Matheran will not be hot - in the forests which are everywhere, but it will be around 33C in open clearings. Most of the hotels have good tree cover all around, some are virtually in the forests. MTDC hotel right near Dasturi Naka and convenient for doing the Garbut / Panorama / Berry trails - is surrounded by dense forests. Choose the Dlx double room which overlooks the forest and toy train tracks. "Hills": Matheran is approx. 600m AMSL. |

I agree with the others - Bhandardara is best in Monsoon and post Monsoon; as the attractions there beside the lake is Konkan Kada which also looks better after monsoons. The other thing to consider is that Bhandardara, at least when I last visited only had a MTDC acco, which may not have a generator. I assume other than Mumbai most parts of interior maharashtra will have 4-6 hrs power cut in May. As for Pnachgani/Mahabaleshwar the weather is cooler and some of the pvt resorts will have power back-ups
