Aurangabad - Ajanta - Ellora
Hi,
I'm thinking about flying with Air Deccan from Mumbai to Aurangabad and back. The flight reaches Aurangabad at 7:25 pm and leaves from Aurangabad at 7:45 pm the next day. So I'll need to be back at the airport at around 6 pm. Will this be enough time to see the Ajanta & Ellora Caves and maybe also see the Bibi Ka Maqbara if I start early in the morning? Thanks

I did it in one day and one way (you are returning to Aurangabad) and it just running through the caves. I do not recommend it if you wish to enjoy and actually see something.

There is more to Aurangabad than the Bibi ka Maqbara! Aurangabad has its own caves, just 3km from town. They are a World Heritage Site. Also, just 13km away, there is the fantastic Daulatabad Fort. It is brilliant, with excellent views - you need at least 2 hours to visit it, but 3 would be better.

Yes...TIM is right about DAULTABAD and CAVES. I think you should not miss these. I think one should have two days in AURANGABAD.
one each for AJANTA and ELLORA and while coming back from any...you should see DAULTABAD FORT also. GUIDE SHOULD BE HIRED...it is he/she who tells the tail ! |

what is the best way to travel from Aurangabad to the caves (probably just Ellora in our case)? are buses readily available or is it best to hire a taxi?

Yes- buses are available but they are usually crowded. on the otherhand- you need a full day for ONE CAVE REGION.
So, I think you have to take BUS and return journey can also be done by bus or taxi. DONOT FORGET TO GET ONE GOOD GUIDE AND USE PATIENCE IN CHOOSING ONE. They do not allow use of FLASH in Ajanta caves. You should have spare batteries of camera and charge your cellphone well in advance. Iam sure you are going to write a very good report of it as you can not help getting a shock. This is hight of religious tollerance of INDUS CIVILIZATION. First section was created by HINDUS and then comes JAINS.They tried to do better than that ....but then comes BUDDHIST era and they shocked everyone in ELLORA CAVES !! There are some lesser known caves also and that too of BC era. One such region is PITALKHERA or PITALKHORA but you have to work hard and have to have a SUV to reach there. When I went there- i was having world's best driver and good jeep with me. But it was worth !! I WISH SOMEONE COULD GO THERE AND SEE THIS !! |
