Hi Meghal. My husband went to Amboli in the winter a couple of years ago. He liked it. I'll ask him more about it tomorrow and will post with more info

Now. He said Amboli is really just a small village strung along the road. There are very few hotels, but the one he stayed in was good. It's on the left as you come into the village, he can't remember its name. He had a large airy room and the hotel was clean, well-run and friendly. He said there is also a resort with swimming pool etc outside the town. He ate in his hotel as there was nowhere else only chai-stalls.

There are lots of walks on paved roads, for example up hills to a cave with a shrine in it and also to a spectacular viewpoint. He said the best time for walks was in the evening, and there were some lovely walks on paths and tracks.

He would have been there in December or January.

Hope you enjoy it - please report back here with your experiences!

Was in Amboli just a few weeks ago and it' an absolutely beautiful place. If you like nature, there are lots of birds, butterflies and wildlife in that area. Madhavghad and Hirandakeshi are two famous places over there, besides you can take a lot of walks as there are many small trails over there.

December will be a very nice time to go over there, cool and bright. If you haven't boked a hotel stay at Whistling Woods which is a very nice place. Also the owner Hemant, is a very keen nature lover and will be able to guide you well.

Enjoy your trip.

We have visited Amboli twice, 20 years ago in September and 15 years ago in February. It was lovely. We walked through fields to get to the source of the river Hiranyakeshi, and the streams and waterfalls were pristine and beautiful. At that time there was only a decrepit looking but decent MTDC hotel and the second time there was a guest house run by a Dr Lad. Hardly anyone used to come there.

Im glad to learn from Piran that Amboli is still unspoilt. Wish it was close enough to Mumbai for a weekend trip! But if it was, it would undoubtedly have been spoilt by now.

I think three days are ok , but would be better if you can squeeze in one more day. Whistling woods charges Rs.1000 for a double room, you can contact the proprietor Hemant on 09423856724

Piran
After hearing from you that Amboli is still unspoilt, I was tempted to go during the Deepavali break and my husband agreed to drive all the way. However, all hotels at Amboli were full so that put paid to our plans. We spent a peaceful three days at Matheran instead, at the "officially" closed MTDC, and enjoyed the last of the karvies, a spectacular display of butterflies and several sightings of the Giant Matheran Squirrel. Would like to return to Amboli though, sooner rather than later.

I have been to Amboli in August'06 and stayed at Laud House. They serve tasty home made food.

Being a hill station, Feb will be definitely a good time to visit.

Thanks for the info but can you give me the contact numbers of Laud House ? How is the MTDC & Whistling Woods as compared to Laud Mansion ?

Please see
http://konkanmati.com/restaurants.html for Tel. numbers. I hope it is current. I think, Laud House has contact telephone number at Mumbai which I am not able to lay my hand.

I have no idea of MTDC and Whistling Woods. In Aug '06, we got the report that conditions in MTDC were not up to the mark. May be because of monsoon.
