ajanta

the lonely planet describes it as the louvre of deccan india.

boy were they not kidding. overpriced (relatively speaking) overcrowded, and not enough time allowed to soak it up. coming from ellora the day previously i was massively disappointed

anyone have a similar experiance there? or did i get out of the wrong side of the bed today?

Thaks for the update; I was at Ajanta on my second visit to India (early 70s) and it was quiet and there were no hard-sell touts around.

I'm planning to go back, as well as to Ellora (which I missed in those old days) and will be ready for hassles and high prices.

...and not enough time allowed to soak it up...

Allowed by whom???
Anyway, I visited the Ajanta caves last November. Found them impressive, not at all overcrowded (can't remember the entrance fee), no hassles nor hard-sell touts. Happy I was there.
And mind you, I DID get out on the wrong side of the bed today....

Enjoy!

Its (school) holiday time in some areas, so maybe there were more people than usual.

I remember a couple of months ago, we were trying our best to avoid gangs of screaming schoolchildren roaming around Mahabalipuram

i really shouldn't whine about it - it's their bloody heritage not mine i think i did get out of the wrong side of bed yesterday, i feel fine about it today.

ooo, btw... i know this should really go in the lodging's section but if you're in aurangabad stay at the shree maya, even if it's only for the absurdly quick web connection. 500 photos uploaded to flickr in 2 hours (took 6 at the fastest webcafe i could find in mumbai)

happy days
