Ajanta and Ellora in one day from Aurangabad?

We're planning to stay in Aurangabad and do the Ajanta/ ellora caves from there. Is it possible to see both in one day, on a day trip from Aurangabad? Should we come back to Aurangabad or plan to stay somewhere else (close to the caves) for the night?

And what is the best way of getting to the caves? Can we just arrive in Aurangabad and hire a cab there and back? How much would that cost?

Okay, now that our travel itinerary is a bit clearer perhaps my questions will make more sense.

We're arriving at the Jalgaon train station at 7:40am. I understand the bus station is 2km from there. Is anyone aware of how frequent buses are to Ajanta? And again, from Ajanta to Aurangabad? (It will be a Saturday).

Found this timetable online for Jalgaon, but it doesn't mention ajanta... obviously not "local"?
