Hi Friends,

We are planning a trip to Maharashtra to explore Ajanta, Ellora, Aurangabad in the month of march 2010. After checking all the threads, i learnt that the best way to explore these places is to get down at Aurangabad. Am from chennai, plz advice how to reach aurangabad from chennai. I cannot take up a flight and most preferably Train. If train, what is the route, as there are no direct train it seems

am planning to reach Hyderabad and then from hyderabad to move to aurangabad...

thanks, parthi

Try to use your imagination a little and think of something you might want to see on the way there and back.

Hyderabad does seem like the obvious choice, but the total travel time would give way to another seemingly longer route that has a direct train.

Chennai-Bhusaval train (22.5 hours)

You can get a bus (or taxi) to Ajanta from the bus station outside Bhusaval station.

I found that train when I looked for trains from Warangal, if you wanted to visit Warangal, there are well timed overnight trains from Chennai to Warangal, and then Warangal to Aurangabad.

There's maybe many options like that, but you give very little info and maybe don't have time to visit places along the route.

A lot of Chennai based members like to visit Shirdi, is that a wish of yours?

WEll do one thing dear friend,, look at comparative statement

First route (my preferred one)

Take mumbai chennai express leaves chennai at 11.45 AM and reaches pune at 09.15 am the next day.

From pune railway station, get an autorickshaw to shivajinagar ST bus stand and pay around 60 rs, bargain, since you are from chennai hope you know how to bargain with autowalas.

In shivajinagar Bus Stand take green bus ( ASIAD BUS) direct to Aurangabad, it will be the best for you, non stop only stop will be at Ahmednagar, Aurangabad is around 240Kms from Pune and travelling time will take around 5 - 5.30 Hrs, so this is the best way you can reach Aurangabad. Dont take the red buses they are slow and will stop at every small village, ASIAD buses are every half hour from Aurangabad to Pune and vice versa, also recently they have introduced Volvo buses, and they reach in 4.5 hours , if you get volvo go by volvo, or go by Asiad buses, take my advice never go by any private operator / travels, take the MSRTC buses only , even the volvos inside the bus stand are MSRTC, volvo is around 330 Rs, and ASIAD around 200 rs.

Many times I have reached Aurangabd the next day at around 4 PM, i.e total journey of around 28 Hours.

Second Route:
Go to hyderabad, you will board train at chennai in evening and next day you will reach around morning ,and then again you need to wait whole day in hyderabad, and then in evening board train and reach Aurangabad in morning, so a long distance, better take the Pune route, because you need to book two train tickets and you will waste lot of time in hyderabad route.

And from Aurangabad to explore Ajanta, Ellora, view my earlier posts.

Thanks friends for all your suggestions...

While taking the pune route, can i plan visiting some places in pune before catching a bus to aurangabad... ie., might be i spend somewhere around 5 pm in pune before i start for aurangabad... so that i will not waste time in day travel....

if so, what are the places that i can see in pune in the available time span and if so in what mode of transport, i.e, i mean a cab or any tourism package available?

Nothing is historical in pune to see, as far as my knowledge goes, only the shaniwar wada, etc, but to be frank you wont find it exciting, so take my advice and borad immediately to aurangabad,
