Trip Report: Ujjain and Omkareshwar
Dear Mikers,
I am just sharing my experience of a small trip to omkareshwar with ujjain (Mahakaal) that i took in last week of october, 2011 with one of my friend.
After deboarding the train in Ujjain at 2:00 AM in night, we came out of station and found so manay riksawalah asking to take you to some hotel/guest house. We asked riksawwala to take us to some hotel nearby Mahakaal temple to save time and he dropped us where we had lots of budget hotels and we took a room in a guest house that was ok-ok.
There is no need to share names and charges of hotels as you will get everytype hotel as per your budget.
We wanted to move to Omkareshwar after darshan and inquired at reception. Old man at reception was warm enough to help us and provided all information we required. There was direct buses to Omkareshwar but not after 12 oclock.
There is a Bhasm aarti performed at Mahakaal at 4:00AM that is worth to watch as per receptionist but you need to register one day in advance for that or get some VIP pass (or call from MP).
First we thought to give it a try if we can make it but came to know that no girl is allowed without a saari n that was a problem as my friend didn't have one so we dropped the idea of Bhasm Aarti and took some 5-6 hours rest.
In the morning we had darshan of Mahakaal.
Temple was quite old and you will have to go downstairs (may be 200-300 feet) to reach jyotirlinga.
Feeling was amazing after darshan as it was feeling quite peaceful and we spent half an hour sitting in front of Mahakaal(in sitting area). That was Deewali time (a week left) and we didn't notice much crowd as it was supposed to be.
We returned to hotel after having lunch and headed for bus stand to catch a bus to Omkareshwar. We boareded the buse (2x2 non A/c) that left at 12:30 PM (last direct bus) and reached Omkareshwar at 4:00 PM.

I would advise to hire a taxy from Ujjain/Indore as road condition is not that good especially if you are travelling with your family.
We inquired about accommodation and found that place now have some good hotels though there was big problem of accommodation 3-4 years back.
You will not get luxury hotels over there.
There are plenty of dharamshalas and may be 8-10 guest houses.
Narmada resort(07280-271455) and Sahakaar bunglow can be considered best places to stay there.
Well we took a room in a guest houst and it was ok..with a/c, TV and all basic things though it was not of a good quality.
After refreshing we had a walk and also have darshan. After dinner we rested as we planned to wake up early.

We left at 5:00 AM and it was amazing..Narmada was looking gorgeous..what a wonderful site it was. We got more than expected.

Omkareshwar is dedicated to God Shiva. It is one of the 12Jyotirlinga shrines of Shiva. It is on an island called Mandhata in the Narmada river and the shape of the island is said to be like the Hindu "OM" symbol.
There are two temples here, one Omkareshwar and second Mamleshwar at both sides of the Narmada river.

Aafter having darshan and performing pooja (There are lots of pandits asking for pooja and we negotiated for rs.300, Deewali time..not much crowd and so enjoyed everything) we headed for parikrima.
There is a parikrima path of 7 KM that covers "ॐ" (natural formation by hills and Narmada river) and enjoyed all the way talking to different Sadhus and chaiwalas.
MP government has done good job and maintaining parikrima path quite well.
MP government has built a dam on Narmada river but they ensure enough water in the river.
After compeleting Parikrima we had lunch in the main market area, lunch was good and reasonable but a lil bit oily (Oily and spicy food is preferred in Malwa region).
We got a bus to Indore and cought our train in the night.
Distance of Omkareshwar from Indore (77 km) and Ujjain (133 km).
Har Har Mahadev...!!

Thanks Herrsarvie
Gorgeous photos Naveen. I was in Omkaseshwar & Ujjain in March this year - and hopefully going back to both in November.
Whilst taking photos of the Jyotirlinga temple from both the bridges in Omkareshwar, did you come accross those lads taking/printing photos. Wonderful people they were (although their English wasn't so good unfortunately). They ended up giving me a photo for nothing and we were all taking photos of each other. I swapped caps with one boy, he seemed really chuffed.
Yes, really nice to see these photos... thanks for posting them.
