Hi All,

This is my first post on this forum.
As the subject line says I need tips for my trip to Ujjain and surrounding places.
I will like to put my querries in points as I think that will make my point more clearer.

1. In Ujjain I want to stay near Mahakaleshwar temple as i have my 60+ parents with me and will like to walk least. I will prefer a hotel in the range of Rs.500-850.What are the nice places to eat and shop around in Ujjain. Also how do I travel within the city to all the temples and other historic places?

2.I want to cover Mandu,Omkareshwar and Maheshwar too as I am on vacation till 20th. I will reach Ujjain on 12 Mar at 9 PM and I believe it wil need max 2days to cover Ujjain. So how do i plan ahead.I mean which place to visit first among these 3 places?

3. How do i travel from Ujjain to Mandu? I have heard Mandu is a very delightful place. So please guide me on everythng about Mandu
i.e where to stay, what to see, where and what to eat?

4. I have Omkareshwar and Maheshwar too in my plan.So please guide on these 2 places as well.

Awaiting replies from all travel experts ann nomads who have been to these awsome places.

Regards,
Saket

Here is a link for Mandu related info http://10yearitch.com/?tag=mandu

check the weather in Mandu - it was very warm even in January.
monsoons are the best time to be in Mandu. You can bike around in Mandu. But since you seem to travelling with your parents, you can hire cabs - you can find them in the bazaar area, next to the bus stop/station.

u can stay in very decent hotels near mahakaleshwar temple...there are quite a few which are clean and decent too.....also there is a new local bus service in ujjain which takes u to all the local places of interest.it is cheap and would be very convenient to ur parents.
mandu is beautiful in monsoons...right now it wud be quite warm but mornings and evenings are always pleasant in Malwa.
if u r a history and archeology lover then Mandu is a must see.there are ruins of rani roopmati palace, baaj bahadur'jal mahal etc.
it is 2-2and half hour drive from ujjain.
same goes for omkareshwar.about 3 hr drive
in all these places u can stay at MP tourism guest houses..they are economical and clean and decent enough.
With your parents taxi might be more convenient ,You can tie up with some cab driver to take u to all these places as they are on the same route.otherwise there are regular bus services also to all these places.

Maheshwar and Mandu are nice places to lodge and state tourism lodges are the best. Omkareshwar is crowded and has nothing but the temple. With so many days in hand, you can take your own lazy time at each place.

Here is my blog entry on Mandu.
Mandu is best reached from Indore, unless you have your private cab. Its a magical place in the middle of nowhere and may not interest those who dont relish solitude. MP state run hotel is the best bet for stay.
Eat whatever you get . Its a simple village with few options.

4. I have Omkareshwar and Maheshwar too in my plan.So please guide on these 2 places as well.

Maheshwar is a lazy small town with all life around the river. You can spend hours on the banks and even take a dip if you wish.
Omkareshwar is filled with pilgrim mobs and the temple touts. There isn't much except the one lane leading to the river with shops on either side, all playing the same song from a CD they all sell. The temple is on an island in the river which you cross by a bridge. After the dam that has come up recently, the entire site is an eye sore with hardly any water flowing.

Hi,
I am Anu going on a trip to Ujjain-Omkareshwar-Mandu-Maheshwar-Indore with my family.
I have some queries.
Accomodation at places like Mandu, Maheshwar.
Is it hot at Mandu in March
What sort of food is available.
Which is the best cheap mode of transportation and its fare.
I will appreciate if I get the practical tips for the trip.
Thanks

Anu

Hi! Anu

Welcome to Indiamike. I have merged the new thread started by you into this one since it was exactly about the information you had asked.

With regard to your querries

1. Accomodation in Mandu is limited. 2 hotels from MP Tourism and 1 private hotel Roopmati. As far as Maheshwar is concered
accomodation is available from budget lodges to 5 star resorts.

2. Yes Mandu will be a bit hot in March. Will also depend on which part of month you will go. The later you go hotter it will be.

3. General north indian food is available with a bit of central india cusine like dal bati churma is also available.

4.Cheapest mode of transport is as usual the buses. Search around in the forum and you will get some info on the availability of buses and their timings. However if you have kids or elderly then buses may not be that confortable since these are not luxury buses.

Hello,

Accomodation in Mandu: Plenty.

Food in MP: No problem Malwa region is one of the inventors of BEST food in this country. Try Dal-Baati at a good hotel, Doodh Shikanji, Poha-Jalebi...

Mode of transportation: Best with family is to hire TAXI. generally 4-5Rs per km is the rate of them or fixed rate taxis are also available.
