Sanchi is just a small village and a minor station on the railway line but it offers some of the most amazing sculptural art to be seen in India. The carved work on the toranas (gateways) of the Bhuddist Stupa at Sanchi is very fine and dates from BC. We tried to find a room at the Govt. Tourist bungalow but they were full and we ended up at the PWD rest house just below the stupa staying with about 6 other travellers. The care-taker had a deal going- room and meals for a very modest price. the rooms were pretty basic but adequate and we spent a couple of days there just wandering around the site and the village. A very relaxing and peaceful place.
