Khajuraho

hello experiansed fellows!
I am a new member and a new traveler to india - start in 8 days!
I will be traveling with a woman friend my age(50) for three weeks and our itinerery is very tight.
the flight to khajurau arives at 13:30 and the next day departs to varanasi at13:00. is it posible to see anything when, I understand the temples are open 10:00 to 17:00?
and we will have to find a place were we could leave the bags.
should I skip khajurau for lack of time?

I know you are a bit short on time but you have longer than you think the Archaeological Survey of India website, click here lists the temples as being open from sunrise to sunset daily so at least on your second day there you would have 5-6 hours to look around.

Whether you go or not depends on whether you are interested in Indian history, architecture, sculpture or erotica. Personally, I think this is one of the unmissable sites of India and it would be a shame to just fly past it.

Most hotels will be happy to keep your luggage in a safe place while you visit the temples.

Alan beat me to the answer! Although you have a very short time indeed the small temple town is not to be missed if you have the chance. Most of the temples are within easy walking distance of the main road - Hotel strech. Khajurao was definitely a higlight of one of my tours to India and is a good place to see even if you only have a day.

Sorry, it's 3 or 4 years since I last stayed there. It was a small guest house very close to the main group of temples and I've forgotten the name. What type of hotel are you looking for 5 star, middle budget or low budget?

We don't seem to have any hotel listings for Khajuraho on the forum - a strange omission as a lot of people visit the place.

I stayed at a hotel that was called the Zen or something. If your walking from the bus station towards the main stretch then it's one of the first hotels on your left hand side on the main road. A really nice place with friendly staff. I can't remember what I paid, but it wasn't expensive and the room had a TV. There are also some upscale hotels outside of the village.

i'm looking for a middle budget hotel.

Just looked up an old diary. We stayed at the Lakeside hotel just opposite the Sib Sagar Lake, very close to the main temple group. It was a new and very clean budget place - about 200R's for a double but you will have no problem finding a place to stay - there are plenty of guest houses and hotels in the village.

This year (february) I stayed at a hotel rent by the Osho-people.
Nice quiet rooms with TV and attached bathroom and nice balcony to the patio.
If you are afraid because of this "Osho-Thing": The only thing I saw was some posters...
Sorry I can't remember the name and the correct price, but it was not more than 200 rps for two people.

BTW: The temples were around a 10 minutes walk from the hotel.

I stayed at the Zen too - a couple of weeks ago. Rooms go from about 250 up, depending on size. The garden is lovely, the staff are too but the food and drinks are very expensive. Eat elsewhere!

You can do it in 24 hours - walk to the western temples in the afternoon you arrive and then cycle or take a rickshaw round the other temples the next morning. Although unless you're seriously into temples I personally think you could just see the western group without missing too much. The best bit about going round the eastern and southern for me was seeing a bit of the countryside.

Stayed in the Yogi Lodge - opposite entrance western temples- , 2 weeks ago, 150 Rs negiotate down to 120 Rs : fiendly,big room, fan, toilet , warm ;bucket; shower.

Anyone been there lately?

Good question, Lobo.... this thread is worth keeping alive. Some good hotel advice here, and not too (I hope) out-of-date. Hopefully, some brand new information will be forthcoming.

P.S. Lucy: where did you finally end up staying, and how was your 24-hrs?
