| Datia and Sonagiri Datia and Sonagiri are two great sites to visit in a day trip if you are in Orchha. Datia is an old walled city lost and hidden like many other places in Madhya Pradesh. The seven storeyed Govind Palace worth the visit to Datia. The palace was built entierely on stone by Raja Bir Singh Deo in 1614 and can be compared with the famous Jahangir Mahal in Orchha. Datia is only 35 km from Orchha (26 km from Jhansi) and well connected by road and train. Sonagiri at only 15 km from Datia is one of the most important jain pilgimage sites in India. 84 temples were built on a hill. Like all jain sites the place is very well upkeeped and the ambiance is really relaxed. In my last visit to Khajuraho and Orchha (last February 2010) I have visited both sites by autorickshaw and finished the journey at Jhansi's railways station to take a night train to Varanasi. All the best Jorge |

| Datia is famous for a great temple of one of the 10 mahavidyas, Goddess Baglamukhi also. This is known as Pitambara Peeth. The founder of this peeth, Vankhandi ji Maharaj is called Rashtra Guru (Guru of the nation)also. This shakti peeth has Vankhandeswar Shiva Temple also as well which is said to be of the time of Mahabharata. Nearby place, Unao has an old Sun Temple known as Balaji dham. The legend has it that leprosy is cured by taking a bath in the pond of this temple.

| hey i went through Datia on my way to Gwalior from Orchha but the driver did not mention anything ![]() may be i will visit those places when i visit Orchha again. i was simply charmed by the place and plan to visit again sometime. i wonder there are so many places in MP that remained unnoticed. even Gwalior (which I quite liked) is not a very attractive tourist destination. |
