Bhimbetka
Bhimbetka
Hello all,
Currently in Indore and can't decide whether to stop off in Bhopal to see Bhimbetka caves.
Maybe someone here has been to Bhimbetka recently.
Is it fairly easy to get to Bhimbetka caves from Bhopal? According to LP I should take the bus to Obaidullaganj (6km past Bhimbetka turn off)and take an auto from there. Im guessing it's about 10km. Is it possible to take an auto all the way to the caves entrance or is a long walk required?
Are good guides available at the caves?

Yes, if you go by public transport. We hired a car in Bhopal and visited the temple of Bhojpur and then Bhimbetka. In this way you can drive toward the entrance path of the caves.
I didn't write down the price of the car. For the entrance of the caves we had to pay 100 rs per person and 200 for the car.
I use Footprint as guidebook and this also suggest that the caves are difficult to find but this is not true. There is a huge signboard above the Bhopal-Hoshangabad road. And there is also a kind of hotel or restaurant at that point.
I was there 2 years ago. I took a bus for Obedullaganj and then ask lift in a truck for abou 3-4 km. Shared auto also run there. And then 3 km by foot after entrance to caves. I took a guide for Rs. 50. He showed me all the caves.
I suggest to take a taxi from Bhopal. You can easily see Bhimbetka and Bhojpur as well.

Good advice if you can swing it. We had a car and driver to drop us at the entrance to the caves (which of course are not so much caves as rock shelters). We arrived early, our guide took us around the loop, then went on to a group, leaving us free to stay as long as we liked. It gave us a chance to look at things extra-carefully and make lots of photos. And on the way back we stopped at Bhojpur, which is worth a visit in itself, even if you don't get to the caves.
