I along with my wife, my cousin & one of my cousin’s friend just came back from one of the most memorable trip of our entire life. We had to complete the trip within a limited budget & within a limited period of time. So, we planned a very tight itinerary which includes Khajuraho, Pachmarhi, Bandhavgarh National Park & Jabalpur within 8 days. Although some of you may think that the itinerary is incorrect but still we did it and we are very happy.

Bookings-

1)Khahuraho-

I have some personal work in Allahabad. Hence we decided to do a break journey to Satna from Howrah. We booked our ticket in Howrah-New Delhi Yuva Express(12249)from Howrah to Allahabad and then ANVT-REWA Express(12428)from Allahabad to Satna

Howrah-New Delhi Yuva Express(12249)departs from Howrah at 6.40 pm and reach Allahabad Jn. at 4.30am(7.50 hours journey)………..Fare is 595/-per head.

ANVT-REWA Express(12428)departs from Allahabad Jn. at 6.55 am and reach Satna at 9.50 am(3 hours journey).

We contacted Mr. Shalik Mishra(09424319190) to transfer us from Satna to Khajuraho @1400/-.

We didn’t book any hotel in Khajuraho.

2.Pachmarhi-

We booked our ticket in Tapti-Ganga Express(19046) from Satna to Pipariya.

Tapti-Ganga Express(19046) leaves Satna at 11.35 pm and reach Pipariya by 4.38am(5 hours jpurney)………Fare is 200/-per head.

We contacted Mr. Mahesh(09424420005) to transfer us from Pipariya to Pachmarhi @750/-.

We didn’t book any hotel in Pachmarhi also.

3.Bandhavgarh National Park-

We booked our ticket in Kolkata Mail(12322) from Pipariya to Katni.

Kolkata Mail(12322) leaves Pipariya at 10.33am and reach Katni by 2.30pm(4 hours journey)……………Fare is 198/-per head
In BNP we booked Jungle Heaven Resort which is run by a Bengali gentleman Mr. Tarun Pal(09993066099)/The room tariff is Rs.900/-per night double bed room.

He arranged our transportation from Katni to BNP @1900/-

Safari booking: We booked 1 morning & 1 evening safari in Tala zone of Bandhavgarh National Park through MP tourism site.Booking cost was 2450*2=4900/-(2450/- per safari exclusive of guide & gypsy cost, which we paid later during the safari)

4.Jabalpur-

Here we booked our ticket in Amarkantak Express(12853) from Umaria to Jabalpur.
Amarkantak Express(12853) leaves Umaria by 1.34am and reaches Jabalpur by 4.30am(2.55 hours journey)…….Fare is 165/-per head.
In Jabalpur we booked Hotel Satkar where we got our room @600/-per night.

5.Return-

We booked our return ticket in Shaktipunj Express(11447) which leaves Jabalpur at 12.30am and reaches Howrah at 4.15am(27.45 hours journey)…..fare is 445/-per head.

I know a lot of train journey was there and majority of them in or after midnight. But as I told earlier that it was a budget trip, so we all were ready to take some pain.

Next the trip report……………………………………………

Day 0(18.01.2014)-

At last the day has finally came. We boarded into Howrah-New Delhi Yuva Express at 6.30 pm.The train started its journey on time i.e at 6.40 pmfrom Howrah.I didn’t had any idea about this train.Beleive me it was one of the most horrible journey I had even did in my life. The AC was not working…..chair car didn’t have enough space for 3 persons……….bathroom are not clean……..no pantry car available…..etc etc. We took our dinner from home. At 6 am it reached to Allahabad Junction almost one and half hour late. We thought, we still have 50 minutes to catch our next train. Who knew that more pains were waiting for us.

Day 1(19.01.2014)-

Our next train was scheduled at 6.55 am from Allahabad Station. We went to the enquiry to know at which platform it will come. Surprisingly we came to know that ANVT- REWA Express was approximately 4 hours late from its scheduled time. Ohhhhhhhh !!!!!!!!!!!! what a mess……….we started to wait at Allahabad Station. At a particular point of time when all of us started to get frustrated, announcement was made that the train is coming at platform number 6. At last at 10.17 am the train came & we boarded into it. Truly speaking I was very tired and went to sleep. At 2pm when I woke, my cousin told me that we are approaching Satna. At 2.15pm we reached Satna. Our driver Mr.Shalik Mishra was waiting for us at Satna Station. We met him there, that was first moment of happiness for all of us. We got into our car(Indica V2) and started our journey to Khajuraho. We we got NH75,Mishra ji stopped our car at a Dhaba. We took our lunch there. The food was delicious and we were hungry too.We took Egg curry@60/- per plate and Chapati@5/-per piece. After that again we started.Road condition was excellent from Satna to Khajuraho.Soon we entered Panna National Park. The road passes through this park.Mishra Ji offered us a deal for entire side seeing of Khajuraho, also pick up and drop from Satna at Rs.4000/-(Excluding the forest entry). We thought it was under our budget and agreed with him. It was the best decision of that trip.

At 4 pm our car stopped at a gate and we saw it was the gate of Pandav Falls & Pandav Caves. We went for the entry pass. They took 260/-for one car including the guide fees. One can go to the falls by foot also, then it will cost Rs.20/-per person & Rs.60/- for guide. But since we were running short of time,we opted to go by car inside the forest area.Pandav Falls & caves are actually 75 km away from Satna & 25 km away from Khajuraho.

Pandav Falls was beautiful. The scenic beauty was awesome with historical importance behind it.

The Pandav caves were right at the foot of the falls. To go there one have to step down 177 stairs. The place was very calm,we spent almost one hour there.

After that around 4.45 pm we came out from there.Since it was our first side seeing in Madhya Pradesh,we were very happy and fully charged.

At around 5.30pm we reached Khajuraho. Our driver Mishra Ji guided us to find hotel. We got our room just beside western group of temples,Hotel Shanti.Room rent Rs.500/-per night of Double bed room.We took 2 rooms. The hotel was good, clean & the staffs were very helpful. The most important thing is the location of the hotel which is just 1 min walking distance from the main western group of temples. We went to our rooms and got freshed.

At 7 pm we went for the Light & Sound show at the Western group of temples. My wife ate Panipuri (Futchka)infront of the gate.We purchased the ticket from the counter. It was 150/- per person. We got our seat in the first row. There was hardly 15 tourists including us for the show. The show started exactly at 7.30pm with the voice of Mr.Amitabh Bacchan. We opted the hindi show.It was chilling cold but we enjoyed the show very much.It was about the history of Chandela Dynasty and the formation of Khajuraho temples. The show ended exactly at 8.20pm.From my personal experience if one see the show prior visiting the temples,it will be much easier for him to understand the history behind every temples.

Please note-Video camera is not allowed during the light & sound show. Smoking elements like cigarettes, match box etc are also not allowed.
After the show we took our dinner at Hotel Siddharth, right opposite to the temples. We took Chicken Chowmin @120/-per plate. The food was tasty and we enjoyed it. Then we came back to our hotel. Although the beginning of the day was not good but end was very eventful. We went to sleep with some happy memories.

Day 2(20.01.2014)-

We woke up early in the morning at around 6.30 am. We got ready, took tea from hotel & at around 8.30 am we went to the Western Group of Temples,of Khajuraho. We got our entry pass @10/-per person. Then followed by security check. At 8.50am we entered the temple compound. There are lot of guides available infront of the gate, they charged 900/-(Govt. approved rate). We thought it was quite high and decided to go for audio guide which was available right beside the main gate.We have to submit one original i.d proof and got 2 audio guide@68/- per aid. It was a really very helpful tool as it is available in all languages. You can listen it,can pause it,can move forward & backward also. Entire description of the temples and all 24 points of Western Group was given there.
Our 1st point was ASI/UNESCO welcome plaque.

Then we went to went to 2nd point which was VARAHA TEMPLE. The temple was small but it has a big statue of VARAHA inside it which a lot of architecture over it.

Our 3rd point was the STAUE IN FRONT OF THE LAXMANA TEMPLE.This statue is the symbol of Chandela Dynasty.

Next we entered into the LAXMANA TEMPLE.As per audio guide point no 4-9 was in that temple only. Believe me, we all were speechless after seeing the amazing work over the temple. We spent a lot of time in LAXMANA TEMPLE.

After that we went to another amazing temple, known as KANDARIYA MAHADEV TEMPLE.O my god………………..We were spellbound. It was the biggest temple among all Western Group of temples. Our 10th to 19th Point were in that particular temple. With a plenty of architecture all over the temple from top to bottom.

Along with KANDARIYA MAHADEV TEMPLE, there was another temple, named JAGDAMBI TEMPLE,which was our 20th point.

Right beside of KANDARIYA & JAGDAMBI TEMPLE,there was CHITRAGUPTA TEMPLE.As per the guide map it was 21st and 22nd point.

Infront of CHITRAGUPTA TEMPLE,there was some sitting arrangement. We sat there, took some rest & also took our breakfast which we bought from our hotel. Then slowly we moved to our 23rd point. It was VISVANATH TEMPLE. Some maintenance work was going on that temple.

The last & 24th point was NANDI TEMPLE ,which was right side of the main gate.A big idol of NANDI was there insie the temple.

Our visit to Western Group was came to an end. We were really speechless after seeing the beauty of these temples. We went to the counter to return the audio guide and got my i.d back. Then at 11.30 am we left Western Group of temple compound.
We came to our hotel and look our lunch there. We took Veg Thali@ 80/- per plate. Our driver Mishra Ji took Masala Paratha@50/- per piece. Then we checked out from Hotel Shanti as the check out time was 12.00pm and the hotel was very strict in that.
We got into our car and asked Mishra Ji,where to go now.He smilled and told us don’t worry. He started after a few mintues ,he took us to Southern Group of temples. Where we saw CHATURVUJ TEMPLE.

And then DULADEO TEMPLE.

After that visited the Eastern Group of temples. Which includes JAIN TEMPLE & PARSWANATH TEMPLE.

Then JAVERI TEMPLE.

And at last VAMANA TEMPLE.

Truly speaking after seeing the western group of temples, one will never find any beauty in eastern & southern group of temple. Its our time to say good bye to Khajuraho.it was around 2.30 pm on my watch.
Then our driver took us to the much awaited RANEH FALLS, which is situated in Chattarpur Districk and 20km away from Khajuraho city.We stopped infront of the gate and purchased our ticket for Jungle entry. It costs 260/- for one car including guide. At 3 pm we reached to the parking zone of RANEH FALLS and our guide took us to the main point. It was best scenic beauty,I have ever had.The canyon looks outstanding from that point. Many people said that visiting RANEH FAALS didn’t worth. But from my opinion Khajuraho trip can’t be completed without this. The canyon was made of different coloured stones. There are 5 coloured stones available in Raneh Falls.White(Quartz),Red(Jasper ),Black(Basalt),Pink(Granite)& Yellow(Dolomite). The actual falls was not very attractive but surroundings were outstanding.

We took a lot of photos there and spent almost 1.30 hrs at Raneh Falls. At 4.30pm we came back to our car.The sun was out there,so we asked Mishra Ji,”anything more we can see?”.Mishra Ji was sitting with some guides. After asking the question they started talking among themselves. Then Mishra Ji came to the car and asked”Do u want to go to jungle for a short round?’’He told us we don’t have to pay anything extra as the he had a talk with the guards. We did not expect that and agreed to go inside Ken Gharial Santuary(Jungle Portion). We stared and soon we find some spotted dear and Nilgais. It was our first meet with the wildlife for the trip and we were very happy. We also saw many peacocks and some unknown colorful birds.

At 6pm we started our return journey to Satna. We stopped at a dhaba and took tea there. At 8.10 pm we reached at Satna station. It was the time to say thanks and good bye to Mr.Shalik Mishra. We gave his payment of 4000/-to him and entered into Satna station. We deposited our luggage to cloak room@15/- per bag and went for a outing around Satna station. We took our dinner there and came back to the station. Our train Tapti-Ganga Express(19046) came about 1 hr late around 12.30am and we boarded into the train.

Day 3(21.01.2014)-

We reached Pipariya station at 5.45 am.Our driver Munnu was waiting for us in the station. He arranged a gypsy to drop us from pipariya to pachmarhi.Actually Pachmarhi is 54 km away from pipariya station. We started our journey at 6.10 am.It was still dark outside. We were very sleepy,my wife slept in the gypsy. At 6.40 am our gypsy stopped at a point, called DENWA VIEW POINT. Actually Denwa is a river which is the lifeline of Satpura National Park. From this point one can see the entire river and its valley. But it was very foggy outside,so we didn't spent much time there and proceed to our hotel. Very near to Pachmarhi, there was a check post & and we have to give Rs.30/-there. We reached Pachmarhi at 7.10am and soon we found our hotel,HOTEL PRATEEK.It was a very nice hotel having some very luxurious rooms. We booked 2 rooms @700/- per room per night.

We went to our room and took some rest.At 8.30 am Mr.Mahesh(whom we contacted before coming to Pachmarhi) came to our hotel to meet us.He welcomed us in Pachmarhi and told us that he will take 4000/-from entire Pachmarhi trip including pick up and drop to Pipariya. We bargained and fixed the deal with 3500/-.
2000/- for side seeing for 2 days(1000*2=2000) &
1500/- for pickup & drop(750*2=1500).

At 10 am we got ready and our gypsy was waiting for us outside our hotel.First we went to BISON LODGE to get forest entry.it costs Rs700/- per gypsy including guide. We met our guide Mr.Dhiraj Rajvanshi. We took inside Bison Lodge & detailed everything.

From Bison Lodge we went directly to PANDAV CAVES.It has a well decorated garden with plenty of flowers.

After completing Pandav cave, we went to the forest area. Our gypsy stopped at a point and driver told us that we have to trek around 3km with our guide to reach our next destination. We started with a lot of enthusiasm. On the way we was a giant squirrel over a plant. It was brown in color.

We knew that the trekking will be hard, but we were enjoying it. Atlast we reached to SILVER FALLS or RAJAT PRAPAT.There we saw a very narrow water falls which I felt was not impressive. The height of the falls was 350ft.

From there we went to APSARA VIHAR,another water falls but this one is better than the earlier one. Here the road was very difficult. We were tired and spend almost 1 hr in this point.

From Apsara Vihar, we then came back to our gypsy. The return journey was horrible. The road was very bad to trek. We were literally exhausted. When we reached our gypsy, we didn’t have any energy left in our body.We told the driver to take us for the lunch. We went to a nearby restaurant(can’t remember the name, but almost all the gypsy used to go there for lunch). We took our lunch there. The food were extremely costly.

After lunch we were again charged up and went to our next destination BEE FALLS. Here again we trek almost 5 km.Oh my god!!!!!!!!!!!!!!trekking was very painful. But this falls was marvelous. We were very happy after reaching there. Again the return was more painful.

Our next destination was REECHGARH, another point where we have to trek about 1km.Truely speaking we surrendered and returned from outside. Then we went to PARASAILING POINT. It was a big ground where you can fly hardly 3 minutes in air. The cost was Rs 600/-per head.We did’t experience that.

At 5 pm we started for last destination of the day, DHOOPGARH,highest point of Madhya Pradesh. Here we saw sunset & sunrise point.

While retuning from Dhoopgrah, unexpectedly we saw a giant bison standing beside the road.We stopped our car there and took some snaps of the animal. It was the best achievement of the day so far.

After that we came back to our hotel.Took some rest and then went for dinner. We found Bombay Hotel very near to the main road.We took Mutton Kassa & Roti in dinner. The food was delicious & cheap also.We enjoyed our dinner, came back to hotel & went for sleep.

@SaikatC

It seemed that you had contacted various Drivers before starting of your journey. How did you contact them? Had you prebooked all these Hotels or booked on the spot?

I also observed that the very first day of your Panchmarih trip was spent on trekking only and that the trekking was quite strenuous. Senior Citizens like me would not be able to undertake such trekking. I would therefore request you to please advise us what are the Points in Panchmarih that will suit senior people (i.e. where one can reach by vehicle). Can we choose our own Site seeing Points or we have to stick to the predetermined Points?

I need some clarification on another point. You said that you have been picked up by Munna (Driver) from Pipariya Station. Then again, you had bargained a deal with another Driver (Mahesh) for Site Seeing at Panchmarhi plus Pick Up and drop at Pipariya. The point is you have already been picked up at Pipariya by Munna, then how come you had made a deal for pick up again?

Thanks.
