No Tigers at Panna, Madhya Pradesh

According to a BBC article it seems Panna National Park in Madhya Pradesh has run ot of tigers.

Quote:
State Minister of Forests Rajendra Shukla said that the reserve, which three years ago had 24 tigers, no longer had any.

At Panna, there are now 2 tigress which were catch in Kanha and Bandhavgarh national park. Forest officers expected that there was a male tiger in Panna but they were wrong. So they have now to transfer a male from K or B...

Here's another:

I don't know if it's more sad or disgraceful! Lessons are obviously just are not being learned. Is it all down to corruption? Who can really say but from the BBC article "Officials from the wildlife department say there is no "explicable" reason for the falling number of tigers." Sorry but my AR*E! I'm willing to bet someone somewhere's got a fairly good idea!

I don't think this is new "news". I was at Panna last December, and only a couple of days after my visit there was a big article in one of the daily newspapers (Times of India? Don't remember.) stating that there were no tigers at Panna.

It just makes me wonder how these places continue to operate even though A) there's no tigers in the tiger reserve meaning B) clearly no-one is doing their job! I know it's not exactly the same but surely a zoo with no animals would not be a zoo and would not continue to receive money.

The mind boggles.

So after Sariska now it is Panna. Not only tigers lost, but genetic variation lost. That make the species weak. Numbers can be compensated but...Very well we are protecting our national animal.
