Malaria in Khajuraho

Namaste

I'm getting conflicting info about whether I need anti-malarials for a trip to Khajuraho. Madhya Pradesh seems to be considered in the malaria danger zone, but Khajuraho is only just inside its borders, I think. Is it far enough north to be safe?

My girlfriend and I have been to different travel clinics which have said different things about this. Can anyone direct us to up to date info?

Supplementary question - is malarone still unavailable in India?

Any help gratefully received...

Apologies, after a bit more browsing, I know realise that questions about malaria are the nadir of naffness around here.

Question still stands though, and redirecting to the right thread or page would be great too...

No malarone in India.

But, get a mosquito repellant and visit Khajuraho. Mosquities shouldn't deter you from visiting a world heritage site.

For general information, there is no such thing as being "far enough North", in India, to be safe from malaria. Assam is one of the highest-risk areas.

There is such a thing as being high enough up; I think the mossies don't like it over 2000m --- but I'm not sure of the figure.

Most of India is considered 'low-risk' by the British Health authorities, but the band across central India, including MP, is considered 'variable risk' with anti-malarials recommended.

Here's -->the map

Thanks Nick
I've seen the map, but find it difficult to put specific towns on it, (I've tried overlaying it on another similar sized map, but it hasn't worked so far) and I'm pretty much guessing that Khajuraho is round about it's northern edge. Hence my badly phrased question about whether Kh is far enough north. I'll do a bit of research about altitude, but looks like we might just have to just err on the side of caution.

Khajuraho is certainly not in one of the 'high enough up' sort of areas - looking at my Oxford Atlas for India, it's placing it at around 500metres above sea level.

Malaria is definately a risk in Khajuraho. Doxycycline 100mg starting 2 days before and 28 days after exposure is what I take. It's far less expensive than Malarone (if you have to pay)and just as effective.
