Madhya Pradesh on bus/rail

I plan to traverse the whole of MP in 20 - 25 days using local bus transport/trains. My route is -

Part I : Barwani - Khargaon - Burhanpur - Khandwa - Harda - Dewas - Indore

Part II : Dhar/Mandu - Jhabua - Ratlam - Mandsaur - Nimach - Ujjain - Sehore

Part III : Bhopal - Raisen/Sanchi - Hoshangabad - Chhindwara - Seoni - Balaghat - Mandla - Dindori - Anuppur - Shahdol - Bandhavgarh

Part IV : Jabalpur - Siddhi - Rewa - Satna - Panna - Katni - Sagar

Part V : Vidisha - Shivpuri - Morena - Gwalior

I plan to do each of these parts in 5 days. Is the ST bus network in MP as strong as Maharashtra? Because I'll relying on it to cover distances. Are any of the above areas unreachable by buses/trains?

Also, what chances do I have of finding cheap accomodation in these parts?

Great itinerary there, good going!

Is Bus network strong - NO
(Maharashtra has a strong bus network ??? That's news to me. The last time i remember, i had to wait for 3 hours for a bus from near mulshi to pune, 2.5 hours for a bus from Thoseghar to Satara and barely found hopes of any public transport from Aurangabad to Ajanta.
Coming to the point, MP is much worse than Mah)

Reachability - I'd say any inhabited placed in India is reachable by bus/train.

Accommodation - I don't have a clear idea. I guess it should be manageable.

Too many places for so few days..., and moreover traveling by local transports.

In Part II you should add Omkareshwar and Maheshwar.
In part V You should add Orchha, Datia and Sonagiri and
Chitrakoot at the border with Uttar Pradesh.

Typing this reply from Ujjain.

@ganeshs - Covered a good part of North Maharashtra in the past 2 weeks and you're right, the waiting time can be frustrating. For example, I had gone to the Rehkuri Sanctuary from Ahmednagar, and had planned to go to Rassin and the Khardi fort the same day. But as things turned out, had to wait for over 4 hours for the first bus out to Karjat and then another hour waiting there for the bus to Rehkuri. Had to rush my way through Rehkuri too because the last bus from there was at 4.30 in the evening.

Also there was absolutely no public transport even from Aurangabad caves and Soneri Mahal back to the city. Had to walk for miles before I could find transport. The waiting times at the Pandav Leni caves and Daulatabad were frustrating too although these could have been easier had I chosen a more expensive rickshaw option.

Still, despite all that, I would still say the network is reasonably good considering the fact that they cover most areas within the state. The drivers are decent and I had no nasty surprises as far as accidents or breakdowns go.

As for the MP trip, I have pushed it to the cooler climes of September/October. Have decided to move on to Uttaranchal from here as I have realised, MP on such a scale will need more planning and I'll need to use more trains than buses. Jorge is right, I'll need at least 2 months to do that trip. The buses here are terrible, I have suffered 4 breakdowns already, was on the brink of at least 3 accidents and have hardly covered anything negotiating all that in my first week. The heat doesn't bother me much but I'm told it will get unbearably hot in April which would have been the thick of my travels here.

So, thanks a lot guys. Will be boarding the train to Dehradun from here tomorrow. Will talk to you guys when I reach Uttar Bharat
