Khajuraho Itinerary Help Needed - Urgent

Hi Imikers,

Asking for your generous help again.
Am planning for a trip to Khajuraho this September. My plan is as follows:

17th September - Catch Hwh-Mumbai mail for Satna
18th September - Arrive at Satna and transfer to Khajuraho. Do some sightseeing if possible
19th September - Khajuraho Sightseeing and Pandav Falls
20th September - Travel to Orchha, sightseeing at Orchha and travel to Jhansi, O\N at Jhansi
21st September - Jhansi to Delhi by train and then to Kolkata by train or flight

As far as the Khajuraho part goes i.e. till 19th September, I feel it OK. But am not sure about Orchha, my initial plan was to visit Bhedaghat from Khajuraho and then travel back to Kolkata. However, it seems that boats do not ferry to marble rocks at this time of year and also there's not a convenient train from Jabalpur to Kolkata. Now the questions....
1. What do you suggest, Bhedaghat or Orchha?
2. How long does it take for Satna to Khajuraho?Any idea about the cost for car/bus? We will be arriving at Satna in the afternoon.
3. Is a day sufficient to cover Orchha? Any idea about the cost of car for Khajuraho to Orchha?
4. If I go to Bhedaghat, I would like to return via Bilaspur. I found that Amarkantak express is available from Jabalpur to Bilaspur. This train is scheduled to arrive at Bilaspur at 5:05 AM and I intend to take the Howrah mail in the evening. So, I have 12 hours.Any places around?

Using the word 'urgent' when it clearly isn't, will only annoy the people you need to help you.

I hope we still look first at threads with 'urgent' in the title, despite the word being abused all too often.

Hi Steven,

I appreciate your concern on the probable abuse of the word urgent. Am sorry for not mentioning clearly about the reason for marking it with 'Urgent'. I want to finalize my itinerary as soon as possible as the rail tickets are fading away fast on the planned route. I did a check yesterday and found some 6-10 tickets left for the trains I must take for this journey.

Will look forward for your replies.

Thanks and Regards
Ananya

It takes about 4 hours to go from Orchha to Khajuraho...maybe a tad less. A private car will be 2000-2500 rupees. One day is plenty for Orchha. If you can, try to stay in the MP Tourism hotel there.....it's an actual old palace/residence...the rooms are nothing special but it's such a novelty.

Thumbs up Suggestions about Khajuraho-Orchha

I had been to Khajuraho and Orchha in the month September in 2007. Khajuraho is about 120 Kms from Satna and it takes about 3 hours to reach Khajuraho. Climate remains very hot and humid in September and it quickly saps your energy, so I'd strongly recommend a hotel near Western Group of Temples in Khajuraho. (We stayed in Hotel Siddharth (Rs.800 for AC Room with Bath tub) which is situated right in front of Western Group of temples.)
My suggested day trip in Khajuraho : Go to western group in the morning (earliest possible). Return to hotel for lunch and rest for an hour and take rickshaw to eastern group in the evening. There was no water in 'Pandav Falls' at the time of my trip and I feel it's not worth the time and effort at all.
Although, I had not been to Bhedaghat, but going by my experience in Orchha and experiences of other travelers in Bhedaghat I can safely suggest that it is a better option than Bhedaghat. I'd also recommend stay overnight at Orchha to feel the pulse of the town that remains trapped in the Middle ages. Every shopkeeper, tea stall owner and guide would tell you stories that you've never heard before. Jahangeer Mahal, Evening aarti at Raja-Ram Temple (Starts at 08:30 PM), Mural paintings of Laxmi Narain Temple and Chaturbhuj Temple are the 'must see' places in Orchha. I don’t think you’d be able to do justice to the place en-route to Jhansi. (Hotel Sheesh Mahal of MP Tourism gives you experience of stay in a Haveli (About Rs.1600 per night).

I have finalized the plan for our Khajuraho Trip and this is just going to be a trip to Khajuraho only.
Plan is as follows:
Day 1. Arrive at Satna at around 2pm and transfer to Khajuraho
Day 2. Khajuraho Temple Tours
Day 3. Catch the train from Satna in the afternoon

Now the questions:
1. What are the transport options for Satna to Khajuraho? Is there a reliable public transport or shared taxis are available for this journey? What will be the approximate cost of hiring a full taxi?
2. We have the day 1 evening free. What are the suggested activities to do?
3. I have zeroed in on two hotels, Taj Chandela and Raddison Jass. Any recommendation to select among these two?
