My trip report on Bastar.
Hey everyone,
I had been to Bastar in May 2009 , i know totally bad time but it was a wonderful experience nevertheless - A revelation infact. We stayed at Chitrakote resort near the Chitrakot falls and Hotel rainbow in Jagdalpur - First one was good and the latter was just about ok. We traveled to Jagdalpur by train from Araku and returned back to Vishakhapatnam by bus. Here is the detailed trip report on my blog. This is a consolidated post with links to my previous four posts on my blog. Do click on the images to go the respective travelogues. http://ponderingmusings.blogspot.com...hronicles.html Hope this helps. Cheers. ~ WanderingSoul

Drove to Bastar in Oct 2008. Good time to go there to see the Chitrakote and Tiratgarh Falls, but the underground caves and Kunger WLS were closed at that time.
I stayed in Hotel Devansh in Jagdalpur, very good hotel. You can see the route details and photos in the following link: http://groups.google.com/group/hvkum...attisgarh-2008

What about tribes. Did you see any tribals? I'd like to visit tribal villages. Are they easygoing around here or are they nervous of foreigners and tourists?

You may stay at Budget Hotels at Jagdalpur. From There you can visit Kutumsaar Caves, Teerathgarh Falls and Chitrakoot falls. You can also visit Kanger Valley .

You can visit some tribal villages. You can ask your hotel manager to arrange for guides to take you to the interiors. I haven't been to any tribal village. But our driver was saying foriegners do come to visit the tribal villages here.

In general tribal villages around Jagdalpur are not very much interesting. The best place to stay with tribal population is at the "Haat" or weekly markets, you can go by shared jeeps daily to a market and spend the day (mostly the afternoon)with them. The most interesting market is in Barsur (saturdays) and in Jagdalpur the sundays you'll see also a great ambiance at the market.
I reccommend you Rainbow Hotel in my opinion by large the best in town and very well situated. For tribal villages better go to Jeypore in south Orissa, is not far from Jagdalpur and you have a daily train. Jorge |

I am coming over from Orissa anyway. Thanks for the info about the markets.
There isn't a town called Basrur on my map. You don't mean Bastar do you? If not, which direction from Jagdalpur and how many kms. I am cycling. If its on my way I can go past. If its not on my way, I will take a shared jeep as you say. |

Hello WanderingSoul,
Your blog is very good, so are your photos. Can you please give us a detailed itinerary - on which day what you did - so that we can plan a similar tour ? Thanks in advance. |

Haats, waterfalls and caves, all make great day trips from Jagdalpur. Awesh Ali a guide with Chattisgargh tourism was a great resource, took me by motorcycle to several villages and haats and had lots of information and stories on the region.
There don't seem to be a lot of tourists in the region. I am usually reluctant to take pictures of people but had a lot of fun at the haats taking pictures and sharing them with people, many who had not seen many pictures of themselves before... Great trip by train to Jagdalpur via Araku and interesting trip by bus south to Bhadrachalam. Spent about a week in the area but would love to go back and explore some more. |

newislander,
There is a village called "Barsur" for sure (I´ve been there) and is west of Jagdalpur around 60 km from Jagdalpur, you can see several old temples. You can do Chitrakoot falls and Barsur the same day, both are more or less in the same way, but the most important weekly market (haat)is in Mardoom on the way to Chitrakot Falls. Jorge |

Barsur is quite a place with several old temples, including ancient Shiva, Ganesh and "Mama Bhanja" temples.
It is situated on the Dantewada-Gidam-Barsur-Chitrakote-Jagdalpur-Keshlur-Dantewada circuit. It is 50 kms from Chitrakote Falls and it is 40 kms further to Dantwada. I did the following circuit in a day: Jagdalpur-Keshlur-Tiratgarh Falls-Dantewada-Gidam-Barsur-Chitrakote-Jagdalpur, which totalled 250 kms. I did not see a ny stay facilities at Barsur. |

Mardoom, that sounds like a good tip. I don't think i can make it to Barsur. Its too far for my bicycle, unless I go with a guide but I don't htink i will. I think there will be enough on my route.
I was going to go jagdalpur, chitrakote chota dongar and Narainpur. Not sure how to fit in Bastar. Is it worth visiting Bastar. What day is the Mardoom haat? |
