I think it's safe to visit Khajuraho alone - the place is really touristy and the main problem is lots of touts, but if she'll not go to remout regions of village late in the evening (I'm sure she'll not) - I think she'll be absolutely safe. I think the best way to get to Khajuraho for a woman at her age - use a train from Delhi or Agra, so she can get from Kolkata to Delhi, than take a train to Khajuraho, spend some time there and go by train again to Agra, for example Agra is not the most pleasant city of course, but sights there are excellent. From Agra she could catch a train straight to Kolkata or get back to Delhi and have a flight back home

When she'll be at Khajuraho - she should not miss sound-and-light show, it's really excellent, it was a highlight of our visit!

That's correct yes; try and search the web for +"khajuraho dance festival" +2010.

Note the results you get won't necessarily be reliable; but next year's dates as given on various sites seem to be 25 February - 3 March 2010 (same as this year's in fact, I think). If those are imprecise, they'll likely not be very far off the mark. I guess to be really sure it's best to contact MP Tourism directly, http://www.mptourism.com/.

If your Mom wants to stay in a reasonble hotel in Feb/Mar during the dance festival she should book in advance. The hotel Payal or the slightly better Hotel Jhankar are owned by MP Tourism and can be booked online.

The "touts" in Khajuraho are basically harmless. The town feels very safe to me.

Also, check the airfares online with Air India from Varanasi to Khajuraho....if you book in advance you can get one way fares for 2200 Rs...more than a train but it only takes 30 minutes by plane...something to consider.
