Burhanpur, Asirgarh and Khandwa
I am taking off on a trip across MP after visiting Aurangabad & Ajanta next week. Have booked a ticket on a train from Jalgaon to Khandwa that reaches Khandwa by 9.35 in the morning.
I was wondering if a day trip to Burhanpur and Asirgarh is possible using bus transport the same day. Is there likely to be a lot of waiting involved? I would like to spend at least 2-3 hours roaming around and exploring the town of Burhanpur. |

We made this trip earlier this year with a hired car. It took us the whole day so I guess it will be very difficult to do it by bus.
We start at eight and after 1.5 hour we arrive in Asirgarh. To reach the fort we drive by a small rocky road of 5 kilometer. After visiting we continue to Bharatpur where we arrive at noon. We go to and visit the fort and the Royal Hamman before we lunch near the city walls. Thereafter we choose not to explore the city but to drive back and visit Moti Mahal, a small palace opposite Asirgarh. It is half past four when we return in Khandwa. It was a very nice trip. For more details see our Kochi-Delhi journal. |

Hey great! Your report proved to be very helpful.
Although I will be using public transport for most part, got more info on a lot of places. I may just get off at Burhanpur, walk around for a bit and head to Khandwa by afternoon. I checked the train schedules and there seem to be a lot of trains shuttling between the two stations and they are barely an hour apart. So it seems doable. May have to skip Asirgarh if I do that though :/ |

I think that just visiting Bhurhanpur is quit doable. From our short visit I got the impression that it is a nice place to walk around for some hours. At least it looked more vivid then Khandwa.
As for Asirgarh, the road to the fort is a death end, so from the main road to the fort there is no public transport. The village below is so small that I don't think you can hire there anything. |

Went to Burhanpur and liked Burhanpur very much. The city has some character to it, the people very nice and helpful and there are crumbling ruins in nooks and corners attesting to a rich history. I wish I had more time to spend at this place.
Spent some 3 hours walking in the sweltering heat before catching the bus back to Khandwa in the evening. I saw Asirgarh on the way from Khandwa to Burhanpur, a massive fort that I have vowed to come back and visit some day. Saw the sign to Moti Mahal too and was kicking myself for spending so little time (one night) at Khandwa before heading to Omkareshwar (which I could maybe have skipped). Khandwa itself isn't that interesting a town but this man I met there told me I could go to Un which is near Khargone from there which has a group of ancient Hindu and Jain temples. I hope to get back to this part of the country some day. This is just an incoherent ramble that I had to get out of my chest. Will be back with a more detailed travelogue once I get to some place where I can collect my thoughts more coherently ![]() |
